The newest airline in India, Akasa Air, owned by renowned investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, has added Chennai as a fifth destination to its network, joining previous stops in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Mumbai.

Daily flights between Chennai and Mumbai will begin on September 15, 2022, and the airline expects to begin operating domestic flights in India on August 7. In addition, the airline has established a new route that will start operating on August 23, 2022, connecting Ahmedabad with Bengaluru.
Beginning on August 19, 2022, Akasa Air will operate daily nonstop flights between Bengaluru and Mumbai.
“With the first flight scheduled to depart on August 7, we have seen tremendous response for booking from travellers and our first flight got sold out within a day of going live. We are excited to expand our network with an aircraft arriving every two weeks in order to fulfil our pledge to gradually add additional cities along new sectors in order to develop a strong pan-India presence, with a concentration on metro to tier 2 and 3 route connectivity.”
Praveen Iyer, co-founder and chief commercial officer of Akasa Air, commented on the company’s plans to expand its network and increase flight frequencies, saying
On July 22, 2022, Akasa Air opened reservations for the sale of tickets for its first commercial flight and unveiled its customer experience strategy with a number of category-first services & product options for a positive travel experience that is technologically advanced, inclusive, and environmentally responsible.
Akasa Air, which will use the airline code QP, will launch its commercial operations on August 7, 2022, with two aircraft.

Over the following months, it will add two more aircraft, bringing its total to 18 by the end of 2023. It intends to increase its order of 72 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, delivered over five years, by an additional 12 to 14 aircraft every year.
