MUMBAI- World’s Busiest single-runway airport, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA, IATA Code BOM) set a new operational record as the festive travel period pushed traffic higher across India.
The airport handled 1,036 Air Traffic Movements in 24 hours on 21 November 2025, surpassing its previous high set in 2023. The milestone also came on a day when passenger numbers surged, with domestic and international travellers moving through Mumbai (BOM) in near record volumes.

World’s Busiest Single-Runway Airport New Record
The new ATM peak at CSMIA reflects sustained demand in both domestic and international sectors.
Traffic flows were driven by consistent growth on metro routes and high loads on major global connections.
Passenger Traffic and Flight Operations
CSMIA recorded 1,70,488 passenger movements on 21 November 2025. Domestic travel accounted for 1,21,527 passengers, while 48,961 passengers flew on international routes. The total approached the airport’s highest single-day traffic of 1,70,516 reported on 11 January 2025.
Operations remained steady across the day with 86,443 arrivals and 84,045 departures. The airport managed 1,036 ATMs, comprising 755 domestic flights and 281 international flights. In total, there were approximately 520 arrivals and 516 departures.
Domestic growth was led by heavy demand on sectors such as Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR), Ahmedabad (AMD), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU).
International passenger flows were strongest to Dubai (DXB), Abu Dhabi (AUH), London Heathrow (LHR), Doha (DOH), and Jeddah (JED).

Technology and Coordination Enhancing Efficiency
CSMIA continued to improve passenger movement through expanded Self Baggage Drop units, self check-in kiosks, and broader DigiYatra and FTI TTP usage. These upgrades helped reduce wait times and streamline processing.
Operational capability was strengthened by the upgraded Airport Operations Control Centre. The AOCC supported real-time monitoring and coordination across airport stakeholders, helping maintain punctuality and passenger convenience even on high traffic days.
A Milestone Rooted in Scalable Systems
The new ATM record underscores CSMIA’s ability to manage rising volumes through structured processes, digital tools, and a consistent focus on safety and on-time operations.
The airport’s performance continues to place it among India’s leading aviation hubs for both domestic and global connectivity

About Mumbai Airport
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport sits at the center of India’s main commercial hub and serves as a major entry point for global travelers. Air India (AI), Vistara (UK), and IndiGo (6E) operate extensive networks through this airport.
First-time visitors arriving in Mumbai often start their India journey here. A clear understanding of the terminals, transport options, and essential airport details helps streamline the entire trip.
A closer look at Mumbai’s primary international gateway
Mumbai Airport BOM is the second busiest airport in India after Delhi. It handles more than 45 million passengers each year and serves as a major hub for Air India, Vistara, and IndiGo. The facility is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a historic leader from Maharashtra.
Terminal 1 handles domestic operations for carriers such as IndiGo and Go First G8. Terminal 2 handles both international and domestic routes and is known for its large art collection and peacock-inspired architecture.
The airport also supports private jets and non-scheduled traffic. Two runways, 09/27 and 14/32, manage heavy flight activity and support widebody aircraft.

Key passenger facilities
Passengers have access to free Wi-Fi, charging stations, lounges, airport hotels, spa services, and an extensive duty-free zone.
ATMs, currency exchange, and GST refund counters support financial needs. Families can use dedicated play areas, and specialized assistance is available for travelers with limited mobility.
Transport options to the city center
Prepaid taxi
Prepaid taxis are a straightforward option for new visitors. Counters inside the terminals offer fixed-rate fares that prevent overcharging. Typical prepaid fares range from INR 500 to 600. Metered taxis operate at roughly INR 625 to 700 per trip.
Ride-hailing apps
Uber and Ola provide app-based pickups from both terminals. Fares are displayed before booking, which helps travelers plan effectively.
Public bus
City buses are the lowest-cost option, but can be difficult for newcomers. Routes 312, 321, and 308 operate from the terminals to nearby suburban rail stations. Non-air-conditioned buses start at about 10 INR, and air-conditioned buses start at about 13 INR, depending on distance.
Train
Rail travel offers a quick and local experience once passengers reach either Vile Parle or Andheri East stations. A short taxi or bus ride connects the airport to these stations.
Major flight routes
Mumbai connects to major Indian cities such as Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR), Kolkata (CCU), and Chennai (MAA). International links include Dubai (DXB), Singapore (SIN), London (LHR), Doha (DOH), Bangkok (BKK), and Frankfurt (FRA).
Practical Tips for Smooth Travel
Passengers transferring between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 should allow at least 30 to 45 minutes. International travelers are advised to arrive 2.5 to 3 hours before departure. Printed tickets, passports, and visas are required at the first entry security check.
Security rules are strict, so passengers should keep permitted items accessible and follow all instructions.
Mumbai Airport remains one of India’s most important gateways and offers a mix of efficiency, art, and cultural expression. Understanding its layout and services makes every journey through the city easier.
