DALLAS- American Airlines (AA) has opened ticket sales for its first Airbus A321XLR flights, marking a new chapter in the carrier’s premium transcontinental service. The aircraft will enter scheduled service between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) beginning December 18, 2025.
The Airbus A321XLR will initially operate up to two daily frequencies on the JFK–LAX route, signaling American’s transition away from its current A321T fleet on this high-demand corridor.

American Airlines A321XLR Debut Route
The A321XLR’s entry into domestic service follows its recent delivery from Hamburg, Germany, and arrival in the United States.
The aircraft will be available for booking under the flight code AA255, with nonstop service covering the 6-hour, 23-minute route.
American’s schedule filings currently list A321XLR operations through February 11, 2026, though additional routes and frequencies are expected as more aircraft join the fleet.
By March 2026, the airline is anticipated to begin deploying the XLR on select transatlantic routes, supported by a new pilot base dedicated to long-range narrowbody operations.

Cabin Layout and Passenger Experience
American’s Airbus A321XLRs feature 155 seats across three cabins—20 in business class, 12 in premium economy, and 123 in economy.
The business class cabin follows a 1-1 layout, offering direct aisle access for every passenger and an upgraded hard product tailored to the narrowbody’s design.
The premium economy section, arranged in a 2-2 configuration, closely resembles domestic first-class seats on comparable aircraft. Passengers can expect amenities such as high-speed Wi-Fi, AC, and USB power outlets, Apple Music access, seatback entertainment, and personal device streaming.
This configuration replaces the older A321T, which offered 102 seats split between first, business, and economy. The shift removes 10 first-class seats but adds 12 premium economy and 51 economy seats, increasing total capacity while refining the overall product mix for transcontinental travelers, OMAAT.

What the A321XLR Brings to the Market
The introduction of the A321XLR reflects American Airlines’ broader strategy to modernize its fleet and expand long-range narrowbody operations.
On the JFK–LAX route, the aircraft is expected to enhance passenger comfort while improving operational efficiency through better fuel performance and extended range.
For travelers, the updated business cabin and additional premium economy seating represent a balanced approach to capacity and comfort on one of the most competitive domestic routes in the U.S.
