ATLANTA— Delta Air Lines (DL) confirmed that one of its Airbus A319 jets made contact with a firework while descending into Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) on the evening of July 4, 2026. The aircraft was operating Flight DL1076 from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) when the strike occurred at roughly 200 feet.
The jet landed safely moments later without declaring an emergency, and no passengers or crew were injured. Delta later pulled the aircraft from service for inspection, describing it as “under evaluation,” according to Simple Flying.

What Happened During The Delta Flight’s Descent
The incident took place at approximately 8:40 PM as the Airbus A319, registered N316NB, approached Chicago Midway. Pilots reported feeling a strong impact while the aircraft was at around 200 feet.
The flight crew told air traffic control that a firework had hit the plane, then confirmed their intent to continue with the landing.
The controller responded that the tower had received multiple reports of fireworks in the area that evening. The date carried added significance, as July 4, 2026 marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, a period of heightened firework activity across the country.
After landing, the flight crew told the tower they had heard a bang and would inspect the aircraft at the gate, noting they hoped a mortar had gone off beneath the plane.
A Delta spokesperson told Simple Flying that the jet reportedly made contact with a firework during descent and that the aircraft was being evaluated. It remains unclear whether the plane sustained damage or will face an extended period on the ground.

How Fireworks Threaten Commercial Aircraft
Direct firework strikes on commercial airliners remain rare. Most reported cases involve a firework detonating near an aircraft rather than striking it. Even so, authorities treat every incident seriously because these events usually occur during takeoff or landing, the two most critical phases of flight.
A sudden firework can startle, distract, or briefly blind a flight crew at a moment when full attention is essential. Fireworks also create foreign object debris (FOD) that can land on runways and taxiways, posing a hazard to other aircraft.
For this reason, airport teams often sweep the airfield after a reported strike. In a worst-case scenario, a direct hit could cause structural damage or lead to engine ingestion or failure.
Recent Firework Close Calls In Aviation
Several similar events have occurred in recent months. In November 2025, a JetBlue Airbus A320 on final approach to New York JFK reported a firework passing about 100 feet below the aircraft.
In April, an easyJet flight approaching Paris Orly Airport was forced to abort its landing after a wedding procession set off fireworks directly in its path.

Record Fourth Of July Travel Rush
The Chicago Midway incident unfolded during one of the busiest travel periods in recent US aviation history. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) projected nearly 18.7 million travelers at airports nationwide between June 30 and July 6.
The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) expected close to 1.95 million passengers across the city’s two airports during the holiday rush.
Chicago Midway alone was forecast to handle around 325,000 passengers in that window, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%. Its peak day was projected for July 6, with nearly 60,000 travelers. July 4 itself is typically quieter than surrounding days, though Midway still processed almost 40,000 passengers that Saturday.
