SAN FRANCISCO— A Delta Air Lines (DL) flight arriving at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) experienced an unusual cabin flooding incident during its final approach, prompting passengers to take additional precautions before landing.
Travelers onboard Delta Flight 2986 from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) reported water spreading across the aircraft cabin as the flight neared its destination on Tuesday night.
Passengers said cabin crew instructed them to keep their bags on their laps during descent while water continued to accumulate on the floor.
The aircraft landed safely at San Francisco (SFO) at approximately 10:59 p.m., and all passengers exited without injuries despite having to walk through standing water while deplaning.

Delta Cabin Flooding Before Landing
According to passenger accounts, water began flowing through parts of the cabin shortly before landing. Images and videos shared online showed water covering sections of the aisle, creating challenging conditions for both passengers and crew during the final phase of the flight.
Several travelers initially believed the flooding originated from a lavatory system malfunction. However, the exact source of the leak has not been officially confirmed.
Aviation observers noted that the issue may have involved a water supply component, valve, fitting, or sink-related system rather than wastewater.
The timing of the incident appears significant. Reports suggest the flooding occurred during the aircraft’s approach into San Francisco, leaving limited time for crew members to assess or isolate the problem before landing procedures began.

Passenger Safety Concerns During Landing
One of the most discussed aspects of the incident involved reports that passengers were asked to hold their bags during landing.
Under normal operating procedures, passengers are generally required to stow carry-on items in overhead compartments or beneath seats during takeoff and landing.
While the circumstances surrounding the instruction remain unclear, the report attracted attention within aviation circles due to standard safety requirements governing cabin operations. Delta has not publicly detailed the reasoning behind the reported instruction.
Passengers ultimately exited the aircraft through water-covered sections of the cabin after arrival. Despite the unusual conditions, there were no reports of injuries, and the flight completed its journey safely.

Aircraft Returned To Service Overnight
Flight-tracking data indicates the aircraft remained on the ground in San Francisco for roughly seven and a half hours following its arrival. The same aircraft later departed for Atlanta after undergoing the necessary maintenance inspections and cleaning procedures.
Industry experts often highlight the importance of addressing cabin water leaks quickly because moisture can penetrate flooring materials and potentially affect aircraft systems located beneath the cabin floor, View from the Wing reported.
Airlines routinely inspect aircraft thoroughly following such events to ensure continued airworthiness.
Although the incident created an uncomfortable experience for passengers, Delta successfully completed the flight without operational disruptions beyond the required maintenance work.
The airline has not released additional details regarding the cause of the flooding, and any investigation findings may provide further clarity on the unusual event.
