DUBAI- Algeria has begun procedures to end its air services agreement with the UAE, placing Emirates’ (EK) route between Dubai and Algiers under uncertainty.
Flights currently continue as scheduled, but operations may stop in early 2027 if both countries fail to reach a new agreement.

Emirates to Suspend Flights to Algiers
The Algerian government confirmed it has initiated steps to terminate the bilateral air services agreement with the United Arab Emirates. The announcement did not include specific operational details or timelines, but the move reflects worsening diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority responded that discussions remain active through official channels, stating coordination continues with relevant authorities.
For now, Emirates continues to operate up to six weekly flights between Dubai and Algiers using Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The airline confirmed its last scheduled service is currently planned for February 3, 2027, unless a new agreement is reached.
According to PYOK, Emirates remains compliant with all government directives and plans to notify passengers and partners should any changes occur.
Emirates Operations in Algeria
Emirates launched flights to Algiers in March 2013, initially with limited weekly frequencies before expanding due to strong passenger demand.
The airline is currently the only UAE carrier serving Algeria. Etihad Airways and Air Arabia do not operate flights to Algiers, limiting the direct impact of the dispute to Emirates.
Despite speculation in local media, Emirates confirmed that flights continue normally at present.

Political Tensions Behind the Decision
Observers link Algeria’s move to broader geopolitical disagreements with Abu Dhabi. Regional analysts cite concerns over the UAE’s involvement in conflicts across Libya, Yemen, and Sudan, alongside growing political differences with regional partners.
The dispute surfaced shortly after tensions increased between Saudi Arabia and the UAE over policies related to Yemen’s civil conflict, signaling shifting alliances within the region.
Could Regional Airspace Restrictions Expand?
Analysts also recall the 2017 diplomatic crisis involving Qatar, when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt cut ties and closed airspace, significantly affecting Qatar Airways operations.
That blockade lasted until early 2021 and caused major operational losses for the airline due to longer flight routes and airspace bans.
While no such restrictions have been announced against the UAE, the situation highlights how diplomatic disputes can directly affect airline networks and passenger connectivity.

Impact on Travelers and Aviation Markets
Passengers traveling between Algeria and the UAE currently face no immediate disruption. However, uncertainty could influence travel planning, business travel flows, and cargo operations if negotiations fail.
The Dubai–Algiers route has served business, tourism, and diaspora demand for over a decade. Any suspension would reduce direct connectivity between North Africa and the Gulf region.
Airlines operating in politically sensitive regions often face similar risks when diplomatic relations deteriorate.
