FORT LAUDERDALE– Spirit Airlines (NK) has begun recalling 500 involuntarily furloughed flight attendants as the carrier works to stabilize operations following months of flight cancellations and staffing shortages. The Florida-based ultra-low-cost airline confirmed that recall notices will be issued immediately.
The decision comes just over two months after Spirit placed approximately 1,800 flight attendants on unpaid furlough beginning December 1, 2025. The move was part of a broader cost-cutting effort as the airline navigates Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States.

Spirit Airlines to Furloughs Attendants
Within weeks of implementing furloughs, Spirit faced an unexpected operational imbalance. Senior executives activated Level 3 staffing contingency plans after high sickness rates left the airline unable to crew scheduled flights.
At the height of the disruption, the airline reportedly canceled up to 60 flights per day due to insufficient cabin crew availability. The sudden shift from surplus staffing to operational shortfall intensified pressure on remaining employees.
Although flu-related absences have since declined, Spirit has continued operating under elevated contingency measures. The airline stated that recalling flight attendants is essential to avoid further cancellations and stabilize daily schedules.
Flight attendants were initially furloughed in reverse seniority order, meaning the most junior employees were affected first. The recall process will now follow standard seniority rules, and returning crew members will have 15 days to resume duty once notified.
Spirit said the recall represents the first step in restoring operational reliability. Management acknowledged that recent disruptions highlighted the need to reassess staffing levels and reduce strain on active crew members.

Union Response
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA welcomed the recall decision.
According to PYOK, the union expressed hope that reinstating 500 crew members would help restore reliable service for passengers and improve working conditions for those currently flying.
Union representatives emphasized that safe and dependable operations are critical to the airline’s long-term future. They also noted that flight attendants have faced significant operational stress during the staffing crisis.
Spirit had previously considered furloughing pilots as part of its restructuring. However, those plans were abandoned after a notable number of pilots voluntarily left for positions at competing airlines.

Bankruptcy And Restructuring
Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in August 2025. Rising operating costs and weakened revenues had placed substantial financial strain on the carrier.
Under its restructuring plan, Spirit aims to reduce expenses, return aircraft to lessors, relinquish certain airport gates, and secure additional financing. The airline has already downsized parts of its fleet to better align capacity with demand.
Late last year, Spirit reached an agreement with lenders to unlock additional funding. The financing arrangement, however, required the airline to explore potential strategic transactions to strengthen its balance sheet.
Industry sources have indicated that Spirit may be engaged in discussions with Minneapolis-based investment firm Castlelake, which specializes in asset-backed financing. No final agreement has been announced.

Bottom Line
Labor groups have warned that failure to secure adequate funding could result in significant job losses and broader economic consequences in South Florida.
Spirit remains one of the region’s major aviation employers, and its restructuring outcome carries implications beyond the airline itself.
By recalling 500 flight attendants, Spirit signals a shift from emergency cost reduction toward operational recovery.
The airline now faces the challenge of balancing workforce stability with financial restructuring as it works toward sustainable profitability.
