CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) is strengthening its Chicago O’Hare position by adding two new routes shortly after a competing network expansion by American Airlines (AA). The move signals a sharper battle for growth and influence at one of the busiest hubs in the United States.
The new services place smaller regional cities at the center of a larger contest for gates, connections, and passenger share at Chicago O’Hare, where both carriers are seeking to secure long term dominance.

United Airlines New Chicago Routes
The focus of this competitive flare-up is not Erie or Johnson City themselves, but Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Both United and American operate major connecting hubs at ORD, an airport where gate availability directly limits how much any airline can expand.
United and American have each argued they deserve access to new gates coming online at O’Hare. With demand for space high and future growth at stake, route announcements have become a strategic tool rather than simple network planning decisions.
American’s Initial Expansion from ORD
American Airlines recently unveiled a 16-route expansion from Chicago O’Hare, including three new destinations that stood out due to their smaller market size.
- American Airlines (AA)
- Erie International Airport, Erie (ERI)
- Tri-Cities Airport, near Johnson City (TRI)
- Lincoln Airport, Lincoln (LNK)
These additions immediately drew attention because they expanded American’s regional reach while reinforcing its presence at ORD.
United’s Rapid Response
Within 24 hours, United responded by announcing service to the same three cities tied to American’s Chicago expansion. The timing left little doubt that the decision was competitive in nature.
United will resume flights between Chicago O’Hare and Erie on June 1, restoring a route dropped in May 2023. Service to Tri-Cities Airport will begin on June 8, marking United’s first entry into that market, which serves Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol in eastern Tennessee.

Increased Pressure on the Lincoln Market
United’s response also extends to Lincoln, Nebraska. While American plans to connect Lincoln to three of its hubs, including Chicago, United has opted to increase its existing service.
The airline will add a fifth daily flight between Chicago O’Hare and Lincoln, reinforcing frequency and schedule flexibility.
This approach allows United to defend its share in a market where American is attempting to grow rapidly.
United’s Broader Chicago Strategy
United continues to emphasize scale at its home hub. The airline expects to operate close to 650 daily departures from Chicago O’Hare during peak summer travel, underscoring its intent to maintain a network advantage.
Executives have positioned these additions as part of a steady and deliberate growth plan rather than isolated route launches.

What This Means for Travelers
For passengers, increased competition at Chicago O’Hare typically brings more flight options and improved connectivity. In some cases, overlapping routes can also apply downward pressure on fares.
As both airlines push to strengthen their Chicago operations, further announcements are likely, especially as new gate capacity becomes available in the coming years.
