CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) has officially returned to Thailand after more than a decade, relaunching its service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) via Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).
The daily flight is operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, accommodating 257 passengers across three cabin classes. This comes at a time when the United States has seen visitor numbers to Thailand rise by around 5 % year-on-year.

United Airlines Returns to Bangkok
United’s inaugural flight, UA 820, departed LAX at 23:15 on October 24 and arrived at BKK at 11:25 on October 26 following a scheduled stop in HKG. The return flight, UA 821, leaves BKK at 16:55 and arrives back at LAX at 20:25 (via HKG).
Onboard, the 787-9 features 48 business-class seats, 21 premium economy, and 188 economy seats (of which 39 are Economy Plus). This relaunch restores U.S.-Thailand connectivity lost when United and Delta Air Lines ended Bangkok services in 2014.
United’s new route leverages fifth-freedom rights approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), enabling the carrier to operate LA–HKG–BKK and back.
The move positions United as the only U.S. airline serving Bangkok via this one-stop routing and underscores the carrier’s broader expansion into the Asia-Pacific market.
United’s senior network executive, Patrick Quayle, said that by adding the flight, the carrier was “changing the way people think about where they travel — by offering the greatest access to see and explore the world.”

Industry and Regulatory Backdrop
Under the Chicago Convention’s “freedoms of the air”, fifth-freedom rights allow airlines to carry passengers between two foreign countries on a flight that begins or ends in the carrier’s home state.
The DOT’s approval in April enabled United to deploy the one-stop HKG–BKK service.
For Thai civil-aviation regulators, strengthening Category 1 status with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) earlier in the year laid the groundwork for U.S. carriers to resume services and reinforced regulatory alignment in long-haul operations.
Thailand’s tourism body and airline executives welcomed the return. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, was quoted as having said:
We are pleased to welcome United Airlines back to Thailand. This route enhances connectivity from the U.S. West Coast and complements the increasing arrivals from North America. It also reinforces Bangkok’s reputation as a leading tourism hub and gateway to diverse destinations across Thailand.

Bottom Line
United’s return to Bangkok marks a strategic milestone, reinstating U.S.–Thailand connectivity after 11 years via a daily LAX–HKG–BKK 787-9 service.
With growing U.S. visitor numbers and fifth-freedom rights in hand, the route underlines United’s commitment to expanding in Asia and offers fresh momentum for Thailand’s tourism sector.
