ATLANTA- Local police arrested a man on Monday morning who was allegedly planning a mass shooting at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the world’s busiest airport.
The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle of Cartersville, Georgia, was apprehended before carrying out his plan, according to ABC7 and local authorities. Investigators say the suspect intended to use an AR-15 assault rifle found in his pickup truck to attack passengers.
Police Arrest Man at Atlanta Airport
The arrest was made by local police rather than Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers. According to police reports, Cagle had allegedly discussed his plans to “shoot up” the airport during a social media livestream.
Concerned by his statements and erratic behavior, family members immediately contacted the Cartersville Police Department, which then alerted authorities in Atlanta.
Upon receiving the warning, officers located Cagle at the airport’s main terminal, where he appeared to be surveying the TSA security area. He was detained without resistance. Inside his Chevrolet pickup truck, police discovered an AR-15 rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition.
Criminal Charges and Background
Authorities confirmed that Cagle is a convicted felon and, therefore, prohibited from owning firearms.
He now faces multiple charges, including making terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Police sources also revealed that Cagle has a history of arrests, including one for marijuana possession, and may have ongoing mental health issues.
