AMSTERDAM- KLM (KL) is leveraging artificial intelligence to determine the onboard meal count and address food waste concerns. Not all reservations translate into passengers boarding KLM flights, with 3 to 5% of booked passengers not showing up promptly, depending on the class.
The latest AI model, known as TRAYS, is tailor-made for KLM’s catering operations. TRAYS predicts the onboard passenger count using historical data.
KLM Using Artificial Intelligence for Food
The Meals On Board System (MOBS) receives anticipated passenger figures per flight, providing distinct forecasts for Business, Premium Comfort, and Economy classes.
The AI-driven prediction process initiates 17 days before departure and extends up to 20 minutes before takeoff. This ensures the most precise passenger count prediction for the entire catering process, preventing excess meal production.
TRAYS, introduced at the end of the previous year, is a product of Kickstart AI. This initiative brought together expertise from prominent companies, including KLM, bol, Ahold Delhaize, NS, and ING, to collaborate on its development.
After a three-month analysis, it has been observed that 63% less food is wasted when compared to providing catering for every booked passenger.
The most significant reduction is evident on intercontinental KLM flights departing from Schiphol, with a decrease of 2.5 meals (1.3 kg) wasted per flight. This results in an annual saving of 111,000 kg of meals across all KLM flights catered from Schiphol.
KLM is actively integrating artificial intelligence into various aspects of its business operations. AI is playing a crucial role in enhancing aircraft maintenance procedures, simulating anticipated adverse weather conditions to optimize flight schedules, and providing personalized travel tips to customers post-flight bookings.
Executive Remarks
Marjan Rintel, CEO of KLM says, “KLM prioritizes investments in digital technology, and the integration of artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in enhancing and sustainability of flight operations. An excellent illustration of this is the reduction in food waste, resulting in tens of thousands fewer meals being wasted on KLM flights each year.”
Sander Stomph, CEO and Co-founder of Kickstart AI, stated,
“We are delighted to have played a significant role in this crucial initiative for KLM. The objective of Kickstart AI is to expedite the implementation of AI in the Dutch business sector, and we eagerly anticipate collaborating closely with Dutch companies to achieve this goal.”
