AMSTERDAM- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) has completed the maiden flight of its first Airbus A350-900, marking a major step toward introducing the widebody aircraft into its long-haul fleet. The aircraft, currently registered F-WZNM, flew from Toulouse-Blagnac (TLS) and returned to the same airport after a 1-hour, 34-minute test flight.
The aircraft, which will receive the registration PH-ZNA and carry the name The Night Watch, is scheduled to enter commercial service between Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS) and Toronto Pearson (YYZ) in October 2026. The introduction marks another step in KLM’s wider transition toward a more Airbus-focused fleet.
KLM’s First A350-900 Takes to the Skies
KLM’s first Airbus A350-900 completed its maiden flight on September 4, 2026, from Airbus’ facility at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) in France.
The aircraft took off under the provisional registration F-WZNM and completed a test flight over southern France before landing back at Toulouse after 1 hour and 34 minutes. Such production test flights form part of the standard process used to verify an aircraft’s systems and performance before delivery.
The aircraft is Airbus manufacturer serial number 809. It has already received KLM’s distinctive blue-and-white livery and is progressing through the final testing and acceptance stages.
Following the completion of the delivery process, the aircraft will be registered PH-ZNA and flown to Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS).
The Night Watch Joins KLM’s Fleet
KLM has named its first A350-900 The Night Watch, or De Nachtwacht, after Rembrandt’s famous painting.
The name reflects KLM’s decision to use well-known Dutch works of art as the naming theme for its new A350 fleet. The aircraft will become the first of 22 A350s currently expected to be allocated to KLM.
The A350 arrival is particularly significant because KLM has operated a predominantly Boeing long-haul fleet for decades. Its transition toward Airbus began to become more visible in January 2024, when the airline received its first Airbus A320neo.
Toronto Set for A350 Commercial Debut
KLM plans to introduce the A350-900 on its Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS) to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) route.
The aircraft is currently scheduled to make its commercial debut on October 9, 2026, operating KLM flight KL691/692. The service has traditionally been operated with Boeing 787 aircraft.
The A350 is initially planned to operate the Toronto rotation five times per week. KLM is expected to increase the frequency as additional A350 aircraft join its fleet.
The airline had previously planned an earlier introduction, but the commercial launch has been pushed back from the original schedule.
KLM Expands Planned A350 Network
Toronto will be followed by additional long-haul destinations as KLM expands A350 operations during the 2026/27 winter season.
Current plans include:
- Toronto Pearson (YYZ): From October 9, 2026, initially five times weekly
- Montreal (YUL): From November 30, 2026, initially three times weekly
- Kilimanjaro (JRO) to Dar es Salaam (DAR): From December 1, 2026, on selected services
- Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Dar es Salaam (DAR): From December 6, 2026, on selected services
- Nairobi (NBO): From January 5, 2027, on selected services
The planned deployment gives the A350 an important role on KLM’s North American and African networks.
Toronto is also scheduled to see further increases, with plans for six weekly A350 services from January 2027 and daily A350 operations from March 2027. These schedules remain subject to change.
Inside KLM’s Airbus A350-900
KLM plans to configure its A350-900 with 332 seats across three cabins.
The planned configuration includes:
- 34 Business Class seats
- 26 Premium Economy seats
- 271 Economy Class seats
However, KLM could initially operate the aircraft with an empty Business Class cabin because of delays in the certification of its Business Class seats.
The airline will need to complete extensive preparations before the aircraft can enter regular passenger service. These preparations include pilot and cabin crew training, engineering procedures, ground handling arrangements, tooling and operational familiarisation.
22 Airbus A350s Planned for KLM
The A350 forms part of a broader fleet renewal programme being carried out by Air France-KLM.
The group placed a firm order for 50 Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft, with purchase rights for another 40 aircraft. Of the 50 firm aircraft, 22 are currently expected to be allocated to KLM, while the remaining aircraft will go to Air France.
KLM’s A350 fleet will gradually replace older long-haul aircraft, including its remaining Airbus A330-200s, Airbus A330-300s and Boeing 777-200ERs.
KLM says the A350 consumes approximately 25% less fuel than the Boeing 777-200ER and has a noise footprint around 40% smaller.
The wider Air France-KLM fleet renewal programme also includes the Airbus A350F freighter, which is intended to replace older Boeing 747 freighters operated within KLM and Martinair’s cargo operations.
A Major Step in KLM’s Fleet Renewal
The maiden flight of F-WZNM brings KLM closer to introducing the A350-900 into passenger service. After final testing, acceptance, and delivery procedures, the aircraft will become PH-ZNA and join KLM’s Amsterdam-based fleet.
Its entry into service will introduce a new generation of widebody aircraft to KLM while supporting the airline’s broader effort to modernize its long-haul fleet.
