On the same day, two separate incidents of ground collisions occurred at Chinese Airports. One of the incidents involved a passenger shuttle bus that crashed into a glass wall at Xiamen Airport.
While the other one involved a tow truck colliding with an Airbus A320 at Shanghai Pudong Airport. Below is a closer examination of these incidents.
Xiamen Incident
At Xiamen Airport (XMN) on May 5th, an empty passenger bus crashed through a glass wall at Terminal 3 in the morning, surprising passengers. Luckily, no one was near the glass facade during the incident, and there were no reported injuries.
A recent report from Yahoo News stated that the Xiamen Municipal Public Security Bureau claimed the accident at Xiamen Airport occurred due to the driver’s inability to control the vehicle properly.
As a result of the collision, flights scheduled to depart from adjacent gates were delayed for approximately an hour. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Airbus A320 Tow Truck Incident at Chinese Airport
On the evening of May 5th, a ground collision incident occurred at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG). Involving a Beijing Capital Airlines (JD) Airbus A320 and a tow truck.
While information on the incident is limited, images show the roof of the tow truck wedged below the front fuselage of the A320.
The extent of the damage caused to the Airbus A320 due to the collision with the tow truck at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) is unknown.
Data from FlightRadar24.com indicates that flight JD417, scheduled to depart for Bangkok from Shanghai, was delayed by four hours. However, it is unclear if the same plane involved in the collision was used for the delayed flight or if another aircraft was arranged.
In April, a bulletin released by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) called for improved safety standards at airports and airlines. Citing management and staff “laziness” and a lack of strong safety culture. Groundworkers and other aviation staff in China are not particularly well-paid. Which may contribute to lower safety standards.
