AMMAN- Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) and Air China (CA) have signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing to deepen cooperation between Jordan and China and explore new commercial opportunities.
Amman (AMM) and Beijing (PEK) are central to the planned partnership, with the airlines considering codeshare opportunities and supporting the development of a future nonstop route between the two capitals.
Royal Jordanian and Air China Expand Strategic Cooperation
The memorandum was signed in Beijing on the sidelines of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s visit to China. It aims to strengthen air transport cooperation between Jordan and China while expanding commercial and operational ties between Royal Jordanian and Air China.
The agreement is also intended to improve the airlines’ competitiveness in international markets and create a foundation for additional cooperation. A key focus will be the potential launch of new air routes linking the two countries.
Royal Jordanian and Air China will explore codeshare agreements on several important routes. By using their respective hubs in Amman and Beijing, the airlines can potentially provide passengers with more travel choices and better connections across their networks.
The partnership could strengthen Amman’s role as a gateway to the Levant while giving Royal Jordanian greater access to connections through Beijing and wider Asian markets.
Codeshare and Network Connectivity Plans
Codeshare cooperation is one of the main areas covered by the memorandum. Under a codeshare arrangement, airlines can market flights operated by their partner under their own flight codes, allowing customers to book connecting journeys more easily.
Royal Jordanian and Air China will examine opportunities to apply such arrangements across several key routes. The cooperation could help improve connectivity between Jordan, China and destinations beyond the two airlines’ respective hubs.
Royal Jordanian Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman Samer Majali said the agreement marks an important milestone in the airline’s strategy to strengthen its presence in China and the Far East.
Majali described Air China as a strategic partner and highlighted the importance of Beijing as a gateway to broader Asian markets.
He said Amman and Beijing have complementary roles within the two airlines’ networks. Amman provides access to the Levant, while Beijing offers connections to markets across Asia.
Majali also said the airlines’ stronger commercial cooperation and potential future codeshare arrangements could expand Royal Jordanian’s network and give passengers smoother connectivity. He linked the partnership to the planned direct air route between Amman and Beijing.
Air China to Support Planned Amman-Beijing Route
Air China President and China National Aviation Holding Corp. General Manager Qu Guangji said the two airlines already have established cooperation and significant potential to expand their partnership.
Qu said Air China would provide full support to Royal Jordanian for the launch of nonstop direct flights between Amman and Beijing.
The planned direct connection would establish a more convenient link between the Jordanian and Chinese capitals. It could also support wider travel demand involving tourism, business, and cultural exchanges.
The two national carriers intend to use their respective networks to strengthen the air link between Jordan and China. The cooperation is therefore focused not only on individual flights but also on developing a broader commercial relationship.
Wider Commercial and Operational Cooperation
The memorandum covers several areas beyond passenger network cooperation. Royal Jordanian and Air China will work on potential interline agreements, allowing passengers to combine flights operated by both airlines within eligible itineraries.
The carriers will also cooperate in product and service training and brand promotion. These areas are designed to strengthen their commercial relationship and support consistent service standards.
Operational cooperation will include ground handling, air cargo and in-flight catering at their Amman and Beijing hubs. Such cooperation can support the airlines as they expand their activities and improve operational coordination between the two locations.
Cargo is another important part of the relationship because stronger air links between Jordan and China can support trade in addition to passenger travel. Improved cooperation between the airlines could provide additional opportunities for transporting goods through their respective networks.
Supporting Tourism and Economic Links
The expanded airline partnership is expected to contribute to stronger tourism, business and cultural exchanges between Jordan and China.
Qu said the partnership would help the two airlines capitalize on opportunities for joint development while supporting closer connections between the two countries.
A stronger air link can play an important role in facilitating travel between markets. Direct services, codeshare connectivity and interline arrangements can make international journeys easier to plan and connect.
For Jordan, stronger cooperation with Air China also supports Royal Jordanian’s broader objective of increasing its presence in China and the Far East.
For China, closer cooperation with Royal Jordanian provides access to Amman and the airline’s network across the Levant region.
A New Phase for Jordan-China Aviation Links
The memorandum gives Royal Jordanian and Air China a framework to expand their existing cooperation across passenger services, commercial activities and operations.
The planned nonstop Amman-Beijing service remains a key element of the partnership, with Air China committing to support Royal Jordanian in launching the route.
If implemented alongside codeshare and interline cooperation, the partnership could create broader connectivity between Jordan and China while linking passengers to destinations beyond Amman and Beijing.
