BOSTON- American Airlines (AA) faced a very rare situation as it was forced to cancel the Boston (BOS) to London Heathrow (LHR) flight after facing multiple issues for three consecutive Days.
The story unfolded when American Airlines flight AA108, scheduled to depart from Boston on July 18, 2026, was cancelled due to a technical issue. The Fort Worth-based carrier deploys Boeing 777 on this highly competitive transatlantic route.
American Airlines Cancels London Flight for 3 Days
Before we start, here’s a quick snapshot from FlightRadar24 to give you a picture of what went wrong and why AA passengers suffered a lot during these hard three days.
As you can see, until July 18, 2026, American Airlines operated the Boston-to-London service smoothly with slight delays.
But on July 19, AA cancelled its scheduled service due to some technical issues, and passengers remained stranded at Boston Logan Airport. The aircraft due to operate the flight was a Boeing 777-200ER registered as N766AN.
On July 20, 2026, AA108 took off from Boston at 8:30 PM local time. Shortly after takeoff, the crew reported a problem with the landing gear retraction system. They were not able to retract the landing gear and decided to divert to New York JFK.
The reason for diverting to JFK is that they can get a longer runway compared to Boston, and they have a major maintenance facility at JFK. The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 777-200ER registered as N772AN
After landing, the maintenance team started to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. But they could not resolve it quickly, so American arranged another 777-200, registered as N784AN.
The substitute aircraft took off from New York JFK at 1:26 AM local time. After flying for over an hour, the aircraft reported a technical issue with an engine, and the crew decided to make a U-turn to Boston, the nearest point of diversion.
Ultimately, American Airlines called it a day and cancelled a Service from Boston. But it operated its scheduled service on July 21, 2026, relieving passengers of major disruptions.

Passengers on Reddit shared their experiences and provided more details about the incidents.
One passenger onboard flight that diverted to New York JFK wrote, “I was a passenger on this flight. The landing gear would not go up, so it diverted to JFK and landed safely. We were put on to another flight from JFK to Heathrow 2 hours later, which ended up being diverted back to Boston due to engine issues. It’s been a nightmare. I’ve rebooked on another airline; I don’t trust AA to get us across the Atlantic anytime soon or safely for that matter. Believe it or not, some passengers were making a 3rd and 4th attempt at getting back to London with AA.”
A passenger wrote on Reddit, “We took off again from JFK a few hours later and have been diverted to Boston again. This is my fourth canceled flight trying to get to London in the last 30 hours.”
Another passenger wrote, “Yep – I was on these flights. JFK-LHR turned around 90 minutes into the flight with apparent right engine issue. First and last time I’m flying with AA.” He further added, “Arrived at Boston airport early yesterday around 2 pm, landed and walked back in at 4 am this morning 😅 took around 27 hours door to door!”
A user commented on the post and wrote, “I’m in Rocky Point and did exactly what everyone else did when I heard it rumble overhead overhead. I jumped on flightAware to what was happening to FL 108. It flew over at 4,975 ft crawling at 222 mph. Although I question whether it dumped fuel because it did circles over the east-end and there are residential communities there. We get a lot of flights coming in from Europe but they are usually dip south once they hit the island around 14,000 ft by the time they fly over. ISP is very close but those are normally 737 landing from the west.”
