MUMBAI- Tata Group-owned Air India (AI) diverted Flight AI116 from New York (JFK) to Mumbai (BOM) to Medina (MED), Saudi Arabia, after a cockpit warning signaled a possible cargo fire mid-air.
The aircraft landed safely in Medina, where inspections confirmed the alert was false, ensuring all passengers and crew remained unharmed.

Air India Flight Diverted to Saudi Arabia
Flight AI116, operating from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai, was diverted after pilots received an aft cargo fire warning.
The cockpit alert required immediate action under standard aviation safety protocols. The flight crew conducted all necessary checks and chose to proceed with a priority landing at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) in Medina.
The aircraft landed without incident. Emergency procedures were followed precisely, minimizing any operational risk.
Post-landing inspections were carried out to verify the cargo fire indication. Air India confirmed that no fire or related hazard was present.
Such warnings are treated with maximum seriousness in aviation, even when later identified as false alarms. This approach ensures that safety margins are never compromised.
Air India stated that all passengers and crew were safe following the diversion. The airline coordinated with local authorities in Medina to provide assistance, including accommodation and onward travel arrangements.
Efforts were initiated to resume the journey to Mumbai as soon as operationally feasible. Passenger comfort and continuity of travel remained a priority during the disruption.
The flight AI 116 was operated by Boeing 777-300ER, registered as VT-AER. Further, it is a 12-year-old aircraft powered by two GE90 engines.
After being on the ground for over 4 hours and 30 minutes, the aircraft departed from Medina and reached Mumbai without any further disruption.

Similar Incident
Air India (AI) arranged a special evacuation flight after passengers on Flight AI102 from New York (JFK) to Delhi (DEL) were stranded in Shannon (SNN) for over 34 hours following a diversion.
The disruption occurred due to a suspected technical issue, forcing the aircraft to land in Ireland, with passengers awaiting onward travel to Delhi (DEL).
Air India Diversion Disrupts Transatlantic Operations
Air India Flight AI102, operating between New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), made a precautionary diversion to Shannon Airport (SNN) on March 15. The airline reported a suspected technical issue as the reason for the unscheduled landing.
The aircraft remained grounded in Shannon for more than 34 hours as engineers conducted detailed inspections. Reports indicated that unusual vibrations and noise were detected mid-flight, prompting the crew to divert after nearly six hours of flying.
Flight tracking data did not immediately confirm claims of a replacement aircraft being dispatched from Zurich. However, Air India maintained that all operational decisions were guided by safety requirements.

Passenger Impact and On-Ground Delays
The prolonged grounding led to significant inconvenience for passengers, many of whom reported extended waiting times and uncertainty regarding their onward journey.
Air India coordinated with local authorities to manage passenger arrangements during the delay. The situation required compliance with immigration and customs procedures in Ireland, adding to processing time.
Despite the disruption, the airline stated that passenger safety remained the primary concern throughout the incident.
