SYDNEY- Qantas (QF) has unveiled a new Business Suite for its Airbus A321XLR fleet, introducing lie-flat seats on a Qantas single-aisle aircraft for the first time. The aircraft will serve longer domestic and short and medium-haul international routes, including services to and from Perth Airport (PER).
The new A321XLR Business Suites will feature a 1-1 angled herringbone layout, sliding privacy doors and lie-flat beds. Qantas Airways will also introduce updated Business Suites on additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, strengthening its premium offering across the long-haul network.
Qantas A321XLR Gets Lie-Flat Business Suites
The new Business Suite forms part of Qantas’ largest fleet renewal programme in its history. The airline designed the A321XLR cabin to provide a higher level of comfort and privacy on routes where single-aisle aircraft traditionally offer fewer premium-cabin features.
The A321XLR will be particularly important for longer domestic services, including transcontinental routes involving Perth, as well as short and medium-haul international operations.
Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said the new Suites reflect changing customer demand for premium travel and continue the airline’s long-standing focus on Business Class innovation.
Qantas introduced Business Class in 1979 and has continued to develop its premium cabins across successive aircraft generations. The A321XLR marks another step by bringing a lie-flat Business Class product to the airline’s single-aisle fleet.
A321XLR Business Suite Gets Lie-Flat Beds
Each A321XLR will have its Business Suites arranged in a 1-1 angled herringbone configuration. The layout gives every Business Class passenger direct access to a lie-flat bed while creating greater personal space within the narrowbody cabin.
A sliding privacy door will provide an additional level of separation from the aisle and neighboring passengers. Qantas designed the Suite as a multi-purpose space where passengers can work, dine and sleep during longer flights.
Each Suite will include a 19-inch entertainment screen, wireless charging and USB-C connectivity. Fast, free Wi-Fi will allow passengers to remain connected during the flight.
The cabin will also provide generous storage for laptops and other personal belongings, keeping essential items accessible without reducing the usable space around the passenger.
Qantas A321XLR Fleet to Enter Service in 2028
Qantas plans to receive 16 Airbus A321XLR aircraft equipped with the new Business Suites. The first aircraft is scheduled to arrive in 2028.
The A321XLR offers a range of up to 8,700 kilometres, giving Qantas significantly greater range than the Boeing 737 aircraft it is replacing on relevant routes. Its extended range allows the airline to use a narrowbody aircraft on longer sectors while maintaining a dedicated premium cabin.
The new-generation aircraft will also carry a higher proportion of premium seats than the aircraft they replace.
Qantas said premium travel demand continues to grow faster than Economy demand across its international network. Premium cabin revenue is currently growing at twice the rate of Economy revenue, supporting the airline’s decision to increase premium capacity as part of its fleet renewal.
Updated Business Suites Coming to Boeing 787-9
Qantas is also introducing an evolved Business Suite on additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners currently on order.
Each of these aircraft will feature 42 Business Suites, with sliding privacy doors being introduced on the Qantas Dreamliner for the first time.
The updated Suite will retain the existing product’s core design while adding more space and improving sleeping comfort. The new lie-flat bed will measure 80 inches and include a wider footwell developed following ergonomic trials and customer feedback.
The revised footwell is intended to provide passengers with additional room when sleeping, addressing an important aspect of long-haul Business Class comfort.
Australian Design Elements Continue in 787-9 Cabin
The updated Boeing 787-9 Business Suite will also receive visual changes inspired by the Australian landscape.
Qantas has incorporated a rich colour inspired by the red earth of Western Australia’s Pilbara region into the personal storage area. The Suite will continue to feature a 19-inch entertainment screen alongside redesigned storage.
The updated design builds on the Business Suite already offered on Qantas’ Dreamliner fleet rather than introducing an entirely new cabin concept.
Premium Benefits Across Qantas International Flights
Passengers travelling in Business Class across Qantas’ international fleet receive a range of ground and onboard benefits.
These include access to Qantas lounges, priority check-in and boarding, a generous baggage allowance and premium onboard dining.
The combination of enhanced Business Suites and a greater proportion of premium seats reflects Qantas’ strategy to expand premium capacity as it replaces older aircraft with next-generation models.
The A321XLR Business Suite will bring long-haul-style features to a single-aisle aircraft, while the updated 787-9 Suite will focus on improved privacy and sleeping comfort for longer international flights.
