ATLANTA- Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) has reported growing delays at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints as the federal government shutdown continues to affect staffing levels.
Security wait times at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) reached nearly an hour at some checkpoints, adding pressure on travelers while federal officials debate funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

TSA Delays Spread to the World’s Busiest Airport
Security disruptions have now reached Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic. Airport officials confirmed that travelers experienced wait times close to an hour at several Transportation Security Administration checkpoints early Monday.
Delays varied widely depending on the checkpoint and the time of day. Airport authorities stated that some of the congestion was also linked to operational disruptions from weather delays that began on Friday.
Despite the explanation, airport officials advised passengers to arrive earlier than usual to allow extra time for security screening. The airport did not provide a timeline for when wait times would return to normal.
According to PYOK, the delays are part of a wider pattern affecting several U.S. airports as the government shutdown enters its fourth week.

Shutdown Impact on TSA Staffing
The ongoing federal government shutdown has created uncertainty around staffing levels at the Transportation Security Administration. TSA employees are considered essential workers, but many have been required to work without full pay during the shutdown period.
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security have warned that missed paychecks could lead to increased absences among frontline security personnel. Such shortages may reduce screening capacity at major airports and increase wait times for travelers.
Lauren Bis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, stated that the shutdown has already created long lines at several airports across the country. She noted that some passengers faced security queues approaching three hours at certain locations.
Bis also said that TSA employees had received partial pay earlier in the month and were now facing their first fully missed paycheck, which could lead to financial strain and further staffing challenges.

Similar Scenes at Other U.S. Airports
Atlanta is not the only airport experiencing long security lines. Several airports across the United States have reported severe delays at TSA checkpoints during the shutdown period.
At Houston Hobby Airport (HOU), officials warned travelers that security screening could take up to three hours. The airport advised passengers to arrive as much as five hours before their scheduled departures.
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) also experienced major congestion. Lines grew so long that they extended outside the terminal and into the parking garage area.
While Atlanta has not yet seen queues reaching that level, airport officials remain concerned that conditions could worsen if the shutdown continues.

Political Blame Intensifies in Washington
The shutdown dispute centers on funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Political leaders from both parties continue to disagree on budget priorities and immigration policy.
The Trump administration has placed responsibility for the shutdown on Democratic lawmakers, arguing that their opposition to the funding proposal has disrupted key federal agencies.
Meanwhile, Democratic leaders have called for broader reforms related to immigration enforcement and federal agency oversight before approving funding.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said lawmakers want federal immigration agencies to operate under stricter oversight and standards similar to other law enforcement bodies.
The ongoing political stalemate has left airport operations and security staffing caught in the middle, with travelers experiencing the most immediate impact.
