LAGOS- United Nigeria Airlines (UN) marks its fifth anniversary with plans to expand its fleet to 21 aircraft by the end of the second quarter of 2026, supporting new regional and international operations.
The carrier will launch flights to Dubai (DXB), New York (JFK), London (LHR), and Rome (FCO), alongside routes to Jeddah (JED) and regional destinations like Accra (ACC), Dakar (DSS), Monrovia (ROB), and Johannesburg (JNB).

United Nigeria Expansion Strategy
United Nigeria Airlines (UN) revealed these plans during a press conference in Lagos to celebrate its fifth anniversary.
CEO Prof. Obiora Okonkwo provided a brief history, noting the airline launched in February 2021 with 4 narrow-body aircraft on the Lagos-Enugu route.
It now operates 10 aircraft, connecting 16 Nigerian states and Accra (ACC), Ghana. Okonkwo emphasized the ambition to transform from a leading national carrier into a recognized continental aviation powerhouse.
The airline has acquired 6 Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft from Southwest Aviation, with negotiations finalizing for 3 more of the same type.
Deliveries start with the first two in March 2026, and all 9 arrive before the second quarter ends. Two Airbus A330-200 aircraft are leased from Anka Aviation in Turkey to support intercontinental services, with the first arriving on July 26, 2026, and the second between July and October.
Other aircraft negotiations may mature beyond 2026. Okonkwo stated: “To add to our existing 10 aircraft in our Opspec as at today, we have acquired 6 numbers of 737–800NG from Southwest Aviation and finalising negotiations for an additional 3 numbers of the same aircraft type, all scheduled to be delivered before the end of the 2nd quarter, starting from March 2026 when we take delivery of the first 2 aircraft.”
“We had also leased 2 numbers A330-200 wide body aircraft to support our international operations from Anka Aviation Turkey, to be delivered between July and October 2026, with the first delivery on 26th of July, amongst other aircraft acquisition negotiations that deliveries may mature beyond 2026,” added Okonkwo.

Route Development Plans
United Nigeria Airlines plans to start six additional regional and continental routes on or before the second quarter of 2026.
These include but are not limited to Dakar (DSS), Monrovia (ROB), and Johannesburg (JNB). Plans are in an advanced stage to commence international flights to Gulf states, Europe, and America by summer 2026, everything being equal.
Destinations include Dubai (DXB), Jeddah (JED), Rome (FCO), New York (JFK), and the United Kingdom.
According to The Sun, Okonkwo said: “Our ambition is clear: to transform United Nigeria Airlines from a leading national carrier into a recognised continental aviation powerhouse. We plan to start an additional 6 regional and continental routes in the second quarter of 2026. These routes include, but are not limited to, Dakar, Monrovia, Johannesburg, etc. Plans are in advance stage to commence international flights to Gulf states, Europe, and America by summer 2026, everything being equal. These destinations include Dubai, Jeddah, Rome, New York, the UK, etc.”

Operational Enhancements and Challenges
The airline has migrated from equivalent maintenance systems to an Approved Maintenance Organisation structure as a prelude to establishing a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility within 3 years.
Okonkwo stated: “We have migrated from equivalent maintenance systems to AMO as a prelude to our MRO within the next 3 years.”
Within five years, it became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and achieved IOSA certification within 2 years of operations, marking key milestones.
Reflecting on the journey, Okonkwo acknowledged Nigeria’s complex aviation environment, from COVID-19 era shutdowns to regulatory hurdles, currency volatility, and infrastructure constraints.
He added: “Yet, each challenge strengthened our resolve and sharpened our focus.”

Additional Initiatives
United Nigeria unveiled “Harmony” as its inflight magazine, “Unity Rewards” as its loyalty programme, and the UNA Foundation focused on education, healthcare, and aviation training.
