CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) has unveiled plans to operate its largest schedule ever from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) in summer 2026, reaching up to 750 daily departures at peak. The expansion directly responds to aggressive capacity growth by American Airlines at the same hub.
The move reinforces Chicago O’Hare as a central battleground between the two network carriers, with United adding new regional routes and boosting frequencies to protect its gate access and competitive position

United Record Daily Flights from Chicago
United Airlines plans to scale its Chicago O’Hare operation to levels never flown before by the carrier.
At peak summer 2026, the airline expects to operate roughly 750 daily departures, making O’Hare one of its most active global hubs.
In addition to new routes, United will increase daily frequencies to 80 existing domestic destinations. These include major markets such as Los Angeles and Dallas, along with smaller cities like Lexington, Kentucky, and Dayton, Ohio. The strategy focuses on schedule density rather than gate expansion, allowing United to preserve its current footprint at the airport.

O’Hare Becomes a High-Stakes Competitive Arena
Chicago O’Hare has emerged as one of the most competitive airports in the U.S. airline industry. United has long been the dominant carrier at ORD, particularly after the pandemic, when American Airlines slowed its recovery and prioritized growth at Sun Belt hubs.
That balance began shifting in mid-2025. American Airlines has rapidly increased its Chicago capacity and is projected to grow total seat counts at ORD by nearly 23 percent year over year in the first half of 2026, according to Cirium data. American has also secured access to additional gates at O’Hare, some previously used by United.
United’s leadership has stated it will add flights as needed to maintain its gate count. At gate-constrained hubs like O’Hare, gate access directly limits how many flights an airline can operate, making it a critical competitive asset.

Five Midwest Routes Added From Chicago O’Hare
United’s latest expansion includes five new or returning regional routes, all operated by United Express regional jets. These aircraft typically seat between 50 and 76 passengers and are designed to support high-frequency service to smaller markets.
Each route will operate four daily roundtrips.
- Champaign-Urbana, Illinois via Willard Airport (CMI), service resumes April 30
- Kalamazoo, Michigan via Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), service resumes April 30
- Lansing, Michigan via Capital Region International Airport (LAN), launches May 7
- La Crosse, Wisconsin via La Crosse Regional Airport (LSE), launches May 7
- Bloomington-Normal, Illinois via Central Illinois Regional Airport (BMI), launches May 7
All five routes are currently served by American Airlines from Chicago, highlighting United’s intent to match competing capacity in overlapping markets.
Capacity Growth Without New Gates
Before this announcement, United was already planning to increase seat capacity from O’Hare by about 12 percent year over year in early 2026.
The airline has confirmed it does not plan to seek additional gates, instead relying on schedule growth to block competitors from gaining further access.
This approach allows United to strengthen its network presence while avoiding complex gate negotiations at one of the nation’s most space-constrained airports.

Broader Market Impact
United maintains it holds a clear lead in passenger preference among Chicago-area travelers, particularly in premium cabins. O’Hare ranked as the fourth-busiest U.S. airport by passenger traffic in 2024, according to Airports Council International.
Cirium data also shows O’Hare recorded more scheduled departures than any other U.S. airport last year. That position is largely driven by the ongoing capacity race between United and American. Increased competition generally results in more flight options and competitive fares for travelers, even as it raises operational pressure for airlines.
Southwest Airlines continues to play a significant role in the region through its major base at Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW).
Operational Performance and Workforce Expansion
United continues to focus on operational reliability at ORD. In 2025, the airline led major U.S. carriers in on-time arrivals at the airport, while passengers on competing airlines faced significantly higher cancellation rates.
To support the expanded schedule, United plans to hire approximately 2,500 additional employees at Chicago O’Hare by the end of the year. The airline averaged 541 daily departures from ORD in 2025 and will increase mainline flying to more than 370 daily departures during summer 2026.

Enhanced Airport Experience for Chicago Travelers
Customers traveling through ORD will have access to five United Club locations and a redesigned United Polaris lounge. United is also expanding the use of aircraft with seatback screens, larger overhead bins, Bluetooth connectivity, and free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members.
Technology upgrades include faster bag drop options, expanded use of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, and enhanced mobile app features such as real-time gate navigation, connection assistance, and local airport updates.
Long-Term Commitment to Chicago
United has grown its Chicago-based workforce to more than 18,000 employees over the past decade. The airline maintains strong ties to the city through partnerships with professional sports teams, support for local nonprofits, and executive involvement in regional community organizations.
These investments underscore United’s long-term strategy to anchor its Midwest operations at Chicago O’Hare while supporting economic growth and tourism across Illinois.

Bottom Line
American Airlines is expected to outline further details of its Chicago strategy during its upcoming earnings call. Additional schedule adjustments from both carriers are likely as competition at O’Hare intensifies through 2026.
