DALLAS- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is positioning itself for a potential new airline lounge as it completes a major concourse expansion. The development directly supports Southwest Airlines’ long-term growth strategy at the airport.
Southwest Airlines (WN) remains the dominant carrier at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, and airport leadership has confirmed that space is available should the airline move forward with its long-discussed lounge concept.

Southwest Lounge in BWI’s $500 Million A-B Connector
Airport leadership has made clear that Baltimore is prepared if Southwest Airlines (WN) formalizes plans to introduce airport lounges, a product the carrier has publicly explored over the past year.
According to The Points Guy, Southwest has signaled active interest in expanding its premium offerings, including lounges and upgraded onboard products.
Baltimore represents Southwest’s third-largest base by seats and departures and its largest operation in the eastern United States.
This makes the airport a logical candidate should the airline choose to pilot or expand a lounge network.
Airport officials have emphasized that the new infrastructure was designed with flexibility, allowing premium passenger amenities to be added without disrupting operations.
The centerpiece of this preparation is the new A–B Connector, the largest capital project in BWI’s history.
The $500 million investment adds approximately 142,000 square feet of secure, post-security space linking Concourses A and B on a single level.
Previously, passengers moving between these concourses followed a longer, indirect route through the main terminal and food court.
The new connector creates a direct, linear path, significantly reducing walking time and congestion for connecting travelers.
To accommodate the expansion, five existing gates were relocated and rebuilt farther west, aligning seamlessly with both concourses. These changes preserve gate capacity while dramatically improving passenger flow.

Passenger Experience and Design Features
The connector’s central atrium is designed to be both functional and visually distinctive. A glass ceiling spans the space, filling the area with natural light and offering clear views toward the gate areas.
This open design marks a notable shift for an airport traditionally known more for efficiency than architectural flair.
Additional upgrades include floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the airfield, partially glass jet bridges, and restrooms that maintain BWI’s award-winning standards. Local concession outlets are scheduled to open within the atrium, reinforcing a sense of place for travelers.
Maryland identity is also embedded in the design. Large ducts running across the atrium are wrapped in the Maryland state flag, making the location instantly recognizable.

Operational Improvements
Beneath the connector, BWI has installed a new baggage handling system dedicated to Southwest operations.
The upgraded system can process up to 3,200 bags per hour, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 2,100 bags per hour.
This enhancement supports Southwest’s high-volume operation at BWI and improves reliability during peak travel periods.
It also positions the airport to handle future growth, including the possibility of expanded long-haul or international service.

Why Baltimore Matters to Southwest’s Future
Southwest carried approximately 71 percent of the 26.1 million passengers who traveled through BWI in the most recent reporting year.
Airport leadership has stated that the airline has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining BWI as its primary East Coast base.
With new infrastructure in place, BWI is signaling readiness not only for current demand but also for any premium or long-haul initiatives Southwest may introduce.
A potential lounge would fit naturally into this broader strategy of modernization and passenger experience enhancement.
