LONDON- Bombardier has secured approval from the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for its Global 8000 business jet to operate at London City Airport (LCY), opening direct access to central London for ultra-long-range business aviation customers.
The approval allows the Global 8000 to connect London City Airport (LCY) with long-haul destinations including Singapore (SIN), Los Angeles (LAX), Honolulu (HNL), and Buenos Aires (EZE), potentially cutting ground travel time for passengers heading into central London.
Global 8000 Cleared for London City Airport Operations
Bombardier’s Global 8000 has received immediate approval from the U.K. CAA to land at London City Airport, one of the most challenging airports for large business aircraft because of its short runway and steep approach requirements.
London City Airport operates under strict noise-abatement procedures and requires aircraft to complete a steep approach. Its runway length and location close to central London create demanding operational requirements for aircraft seeking approval to use the airport.
Bombardier said the Global 8000’s engineering capabilities support its access to the airport. The aircraft features an advanced wing design with leading-edge slats and a braking system designed to deliver strong field performance.
Stephen McCullough, Bombardier’s Executive Vice President of Engineering, Product Development and Bombardier Defense, said the approval demonstrates the aircraft’s ability to operate from a demanding airfield while providing customers with faster access to one of the world’s major financial centres.
London City Approval Could Cut Ground Travel Time
The new airport access provides a significant time-saving advantage for Global 8000 passengers traveling to London.
Larger business aircraft typically use airports such as Farnborough or London Luton when serving the London market. Those airports can require substantially longer road transfers to central London.
Bombardier estimates that Global 8000 passengers using London City Airport can save up to 60 to 90 minutes of ground transfer time compared with alternative airports. The shorter transfer can be particularly valuable for business travelers who need rapid access to London’s financial and commercial districts.
The approval also expands the practical value of the Global 8000 for customers traveling between major international business centers and London.
Global 8000 Combines Speed and Long-Range Capability
The Global 8000 is designed as an ultra-long-range business jet with a claimed maximum speed of Mach 0.95 and a range of 8,000 nautical miles.
Its performance allows nonstop travel across long international routes while providing access to a wider selection of airports. Bombardier says the aircraft can access up to 30% more airports than its nearest competitor, supporting greater flexibility for business aviation operators.
The aircraft also features a spacious luxury cabin, a low cabin altitude and Bombardier’s Smooth FlÄłght technology, designed to improve passenger comfort on long flights.
London City Airport Adds Strategic Value
London City Airport’s proximity to central London makes its approval particularly important for long-range business aviation.
The airport is located close to the capital’s financial district, reducing the amount of time passengers spend traveling between the airport and their final destination. For Global 8000 operators, the combination of long-range performance and London City access can provide a more direct travel option for international business trips.
The approval also highlights the operational capabilities required for ultra-long-range business jets to serve airports with restrictive runway and approach conditions.
