DALLAS- Southwest Airlines (WN), headquartered in Dallas and anchored at Dallas Love Field (DAL), briefly opened external applications for flight attendants and closed them in just 38 minutes after hitting its limit.
The ultra-short hiring window underscored the airline’s low attrition, strong internal demand, and the intense competition to secure a cabin crew role at one of the most stable U.S. carriers.

Southwest Airlines Attendant Hiring
Southwest Airlines is known for rarely recruiting flight attendants from outside its existing workforce. Employee satisfaction remains high, and vacancies are usually filled internally before external hiring is considered.
When external recruitment does occur, it attracts immediate attention across the industry. This latest opening proved just how compressed the process has become, with thousands of candidates competing in real time.
On Tuesday, Southwest opened its application portal with a cap of 15,000 submissions for a limited number of flight attendant positions. Of those, 10,000 applications were reserved for candidates referred by existing Southwest flight attendants.
That left only 5,000 application slots for external candidates. The airline did not publicly promote the opening and reportedly instructed staff not to share details ahead of time. Despite that, word spread quickly.
Once the portal went live, applications flooded in at such speed that the cap was reached in 38 minutes. According to PYOK, several candidates were removed from the system mid-application as the portal automatically shut down upon reaching the limit.

Faster Than Any Previous Hiring Round
The 38-minute window set a new benchmark for speed. In comparison, Southwest’s 2021 flight attendant hiring round remained open for approximately four hours, which was already considered unusually brief at the time.
That earlier hiring push followed pandemic-era staff reductions and was driven by urgent operational needs. The latest round reflects a different reality, where demand for Southwest roles far exceeds supply.

Why Demand Remains Exceptionally High
Southwest’s appeal continues despite recent pressure from activist investor Elliott and shifts in the airline’s broader business strategy. The airline’s labor agreements remain a key factor.
Under the current contract, Southwest flight attendants can reach a top hourly rate of $84.60 by 2027. While pay comparisons across U.S. airlines vary, Southwest cabin crew are widely regarded as among the highest-paid in the domestic market.
Strong compensation, relative job security, and a long-standing company culture continue to make Southwest one of the most sought-after employers in U.S. commercial aviation.
