DALLAS- Passengers aboard an American Airlines (AA) flight from Dallas (DFW) to Minneapolis (MSP) on December 7, 2024, faced an unusual and unsettling ordeal when water began flooding the cabin mid-flight.
A leak from a rear restroom caused water to stream down the aisle, creating a scene that some passengers likened to a disaster movie.
American Airlines Flight Flooded
As per the current schedule, American Airlines mostly deploys Boeing 737 aircraft on the DFW-MSP flight route.
According to the New York Post, the issue started when a passenger noticed water leaking from the restroom and informed a flight attendant. Despite the crew’s efforts, they were unable to stop the water, which continued spreading toward the front of the plane.
Hilary Stewart Blazevic, a passenger, described the scene to Storyful, noting the initial disbelief and panic as travelers scrambled to lift their belongings and feet out of the accumulating water, which she called “disgusting.”
A TikTok video capturing the chaos has since gone viral, amassing over 7.2 million views. The clip, set humorously to Céline Dion’s My Heart Will Go On—the iconic theme from Titanic—showed passengers reacting to the flood with a mix of humor and unease.
The video’s caption, “The in-flight movie was Titanic,” and online comments further highlighted the surreal nature of the incident. One user wrote, “Imagine drowning…on a plane…in the air,” while another quipped, “New final destination fear unlocked.”
This unsettling event joins a string of recent airline incidents that have left passengers shaken. In September, an Avianca Airlines flight to Colombia encountered severe turbulence, prompting terrified reactions from those onboard.
Social Media User Comments
A comment under the viral TikTok video humorously speculated on the cause of the leak, asking who might have clogged the toilet, as the flooding began in the rear bathroom.
Others used the situation to highlight practical concerns, with one commenter advising against wearing open-toe shoes, stating, “Another reason to wear closed-toe shoes and not flip-flops or Crocs.”
The surreal nature of the event sparked a wave of dark humor. One person wrote, “Imagine drowning… on a plane… in the air.” Another added, “Drowning at 30,000 feet going 500 mph lol, new death fear unlocked.”

Well, it’s not the first time, On August 7, 2024, American Airlines flight AA36 from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) diverted to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) due to an overflowing lavatory. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
Data from Flight Radar 24 shows the Boeing 777-200(ER), registered as N751AN, departed Dallas at 10:53 PM UTC. After approximately two hours and 30 minutes in the air, a flight attendant reported the lavatory issue while the aircraft was flying over New York state. Following standard safety protocols, the crew opted for a precautionary landing at JFK. The plane touched down at 2:23 AM UTC after burning excess fuel to ensure a safe landing.
The 23.4-year-old aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines, was scheduled to continue its journey to Madrid but was grounded due to maintenance concerns. Passengers were delayed as the airline arranged for a replacement aircraft.
An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed the diversion with Aviation A2Z, stating:
