NOIDA- The upcoming major airport, Noida International Airport (NIA), also known as Jewar Airport, conducts a critical trial run for aircraft operations today, on December 9, 2024, at 11 am.
An aircraft from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) executed a comprehensive landing procedure that marks a significant milestone in the airport’s preparation for commercial launch.
Noida Airport Trial Landing
The trial involves complex aerial maneuvers around the airport, lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. During this period, the aircraft will collect comprehensive operational data for detailed analysis and subsequent submission to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for thorough review.
Christoph Schnellmann, the airport’s Chief Executive Officer shared with Hindu BusinessLine the importance of this landing trial in establishing the airport’s operational readiness. The trial involves testing approach and departure procedures on the airport’s expansive 3.9 km long runway, designated as 10-28.
According to Schnellmann, a single validation flight will be conducted. If successful, no additional validation flights will be required. This approach underscores the meticulous planning and confidence in the airport’s preparedness.
Prior groundwork for this trial began in October 2024, when the airport completed a crucial system calibration using a Beech King Air 360 ER aircraft from the Airports Authority of India.
The calibration, executed between October 10 and 14, confirmed the full operational status of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) systems.
The trial process is scheduled to continue until December 15, after which NIAL will submit an application to DGCA for an aerodrome license.
UPDATE as of December 9, 2024, 2:40 PM IST:
IndiGo Airlines (6E) successfully executed a comprehensive technical trial run on December 9, 2024, at a Noida International Airport, deploying a fully crewed passenger aircraft with support from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The operational assessment focused on evaluating critical aviation infrastructure through precise takeoff and landing maneuvers.
Complementing Delhi Int’l Airport
Noida International Airport (NIA), also known as Jewar International Airport, is set to commence commercial operations on April 17, 2025, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure development. The multi-nodal airport will initially connect 25 domestic routes, three international services, and two cargo flights across 25 Indian cities.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has authorized domestic flight operations, while the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has approved three international services. However, final central government clearance is still pending, adding complexity to the launch timeline.
Flight trials without passengers are scheduled between November 15 and December 15, utilizing a public-private partnership model that reflects modern infrastructure development strategies. NIAL CEO Dr. Arunvir Singh confirmed initial approval for 25 domestic flights, with plans to expand services based on passenger demand growth.
YIAPL, a Zurich AG subsidiary, has meticulously outlined critical timelines for the airport’s clearances. The CEO emphasizes the importance of meeting the April 17 deadline to prevent potential six-month delays in international approvals and IATA slot allocations.
IndiGo Airlines (6E) and Akasa Air (QP) will conduct comprehensive flight tests with full crews to verify runway functionality and operational systems. These rigorous tests are designed to ensure operational readiness and strict safety compliance before the airport’s official launch.
The Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a ₹21 crore fine on NIAL for the operational delay from the originally planned September 2024 to the current April 2025 launch date.
