CHICAGO- Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and United Airlines (UA) have announced the launch of two nonstop routes (Chicago and Houston) starting in May 2025.
The Houston route will feature four weekly flights during the summer and daily service in the winter. United will also introduce three weekly summer flights to its Chicago hub, strengthening connectivity between Edmonton and key U.S. destinations.
United Chicago to Edmonton Flight
YEG emphasized the importance of Chicago as a global hub for finance, manufacturing, and technology. These flights will provide Edmonton businesses direct access to international networks and key industry leaders, strengthening their global competitiveness.
This announcement comes shortly after WestJet (WS) revealed plans to add direct flights from YEG to Salt Lake City and Chicago, along with expanded domestic services.
The new routes underscore YEG’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity and support economic growth in Edmonton by linking it with critical U.S. business and leisure destinations.
Houston- Vital United Hub
Houston, a hub for United Airlines, offers direct access to its extensive global network, particularly in Latin and South America. The route provides vital links for Edmonton’s energy sector professionals to collaborate and innovate in Houston, a global energy powerhouse.
Beyond energy, industries such as aerospace, healthcare, and technology in Houston present significant opportunities for Edmonton businesses to expand partnerships and market reach.
Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, emphasized the broader impact of this connection:
The route supports United Airlines’ strategic partnership with Air Canada, providing travelers with greater transborder connectivity. Mark Weithofer, United’s Managing Director of Domestic Network, highlighted the airline’s commitment to offering more choices for passengers across North America.
Myron Keehn, President and CEO of Edmonton International Airport, underlined YEG’s vision:
Houston Airports, including George Bush Intercontinental Airport, William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), and Ellington Airport/Houston Spaceport (EFD), served a record 60.1 million passengers in 2023. The system connects travelers to over 180 destinations, solidifying Houston as a primary gateway for the South-Central U.S. and Latin America.
Edmonton International Airport, Canada’s fifth-busiest airport by passenger traffic, supports over 21,000 jobs and generates an economic output of $4.9 billion. YEG’s Airport City Sustainability Campus focuses on innovation in hydrogen and drone technologies and aligns with its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
