KUALA LUMPUR- AirAsia (AK) has announced the commencement of two international flights from its operating base, Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Sri Vijaya Puram (IXZ) and Nairobi (NBO).
Malaysia-based AirAsia X operated the Nairobi, Kenya flights with A330 while AirAsia inaugurated Sri Vijaya Puram (previously known as Port Blair) flights with A320s.
AirAsia Nairobi Flights
On Friday, November 15th, the airline announced that its medium and long-haul subsidiary AirAsia X had touched down in Nairobi.
Flight D7 101 operated by 9M-XBI departed KLIA at 7:41 pm and landed in Kenya’s capital at 11:00 pm local time, right on schedule, after an 8-hour and 18 minutes journey from KLIA. The 285-seater Airbus A330-300 had a 90-minute turnaround before returning to Malaysian shores in 9 hours and 16 minutes airborne as D7 102.
AirAsia announced that the outbound flight had a 90% load factor and the inbound plane was approximately 70% full. D7 101’s sending off and D7 102’s arrival was done in the company of some of the airline’s senior-most staff members.
D7 101 has a block time of 9 hours and departs Kuala Lumpur at 7 pm local time before touching down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 11 pm. D7 102 is scheduled to depart Nairobi at 12:30 am EAT and return to its base at 3:10 pm MYT after a block duration of 9 hours 40 minutes. The flight will operate four times per week.
Nairobi is AirAsia X’s first destination in Africa and it hopes to provide travelers from within Asia with a reliable low-cost option to and from the safari city.
First International Flight of Sri Vijaya Puram
AirAsia started flights to Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) as well. They are the first carrier to operate international flights to and from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India.
The maiden flight operated as AK55 by an Airbus A320-200 (9M-AJT) touched down at Veer Savarkar International Airport at 10:13 am IST on Saturday, November 16, 2024, after a 1-hour 52 minutes hop across the Indian Ocean from Kuala Lumpur.
The return journey commenced after a 35-minute turnaround as AK54 lifted off from Sri Vijaya Puram at 11:19 IST and landed back in the Malaysian capital of KL after 2 hours and 25 minutes in the air. This flight will be operated thrice weekly.
Apart from Malaysian travelers, other Southeast Asians will also have more convenient accessibility to scenic Indian destinations as previously, travellers needed to connect via Bengaluru or Chennai.
Sri Vijaya Puram is the 20th Indian destination served presently by the AirAsia group.
