ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines (DL) has announced plans to reintroduce widebody aircraft on its Detroit (DTW) to Phoenix (PHX) route starting October 27, 2024.
This move marks a significant upgrade in service quality for passengers on this domestic flight.
Delta Widebody on Domestic Routes
The airline will deploy the Airbus A330-300 aircraft for daily flights between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), Aeroroutes reported. This service is scheduled to continue until March 8, 2025, covering the peak winter travel season.
Delta last operated widebody aircraft on this route regularly until October 2021. The reintroduction of larger aircraft suggests an anticipated increase in passenger demand or a strategic shift in Delta’s domestic fleet deployment.
The flight schedule for the period from January 6, 2025, to March 8, 2025, is as follows:
- Flight DL1070 will depart Detroit at 08:25 and arrive in Phoenix at 11:02.
- The return flight, also numbered DL1070, will leave Phoenix at 12:15 and land in Detroit at 17:58.
This Detroit-Phoenix route joins an extensive list of domestic routes where Delta plans to operate widebody aircraft during the Northern Winter 2024/25 season.

It’s worth noting that some routes, such as Atlanta to Las Vegas, will only see widebody service until mid-December 2024 or early January 2025. This scheduling likely aligns with peak holiday travel periods.
The deployment of widebody aircraft on domestic routes offers several advantages for passengers. These larger planes typically provide more spacious cabins, additional legroom, and enhanced in-flight entertainment options.
