Fortunately, the collapse occurred after all passengers had disembarked, with no reported injuries. However, the aircraft’s front left-hand door (door 1L) sustained considerable damage in the process. The incident occurred on May 2 and gained attention on social media platforms.
The aircraft in question bears the registration N216HA and was newly delivered to Hawaiian Airlines in September 2018, according to data from ch-aviation.
It is one of 18 Airbus A321neos in the airline’s fleet, with a capacity of up to 189 passengers in a two-class configuration – 16 in first class and 173 in economy class.
With an average age of 5.4 years, these aircraft are regularly utilized on Hawaiian Airlines’ routes to the West Coast, typically ranging from 5 to 6 hours in duration.
Aircraft Grounded at SFO
After the collapse of the jet bridge, the return flight of N216HA, designated as HA41, was canceled. At the time of writing on May 6, the aircraft remains grounded at San Francisco International Airport, awaiting repair.
Flight HA42 is a daily scheduled passenger service operated by Hawaiian Airlines between Kahului and San Francisco.
Further, the airline utilizes its Airbus A321neos for this route. Departing from the Hawaiian island at 10:45, the flight will arrive in California just over five hours later, at 18:50.
In the previous year, San Francisco ranked as the third-busiest route from Kahului, serving a total of 272,000 passengers. This placed it behind Honolulu (1.07 million passengers) and Los Angeles (441,000 passengers).
Hawaiian Airlines faces competition from United Airlines (UA) and Alaska Airlines (AS) on this route.
Additionally, from Kahului Airport, Hawaiian Airlines offers flights to various destinations across the West Coast, including Los Angeles (LAX), Portland (PDX), San Diego (SAN), and Seattle (SEA).
