As per a report from PTI, the initial development phase for the forthcoming international airport in Noida is estimated to cost Rs 10,056 crore, with approximately Rs 7,100 crore already expended.
The first phase of the airport, occupying 1,300 hectares, is projected to commence flight operations by September 2024.
Reportedly, during its initial phase, the airport assigned with code DXN will feature a single runway and a terminal building capable of accommodating 12 million passengers annually.
Progress so Far
Completing the runway’s asphalt work sets the stage for the test flight, aiming to bolster the BJP’s electoral narrative on infrastructure advancement in Uttar Pradesh, a politically pivotal state contributing 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
A reliable source from Noida International Airport (NIA) affirmed that construction is progressing vigorously and aligning with the committed timeline.
Presently, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, standing at a height of 38 meters, and the 3,900-meter runway are nearing completion. According to the official, a significant milestone in passenger readiness was achieved with the unveiling of the airport’s IATA code, DXN.
In pursuit of establishing efficient road connectivity to the airport, an official disclosed that Noida International Airport (NIA) is strategizing around utilizing the Yamuna Expressway as the primary link.
Specific plans include separate road access for cargo and passenger traffic, with an additional dedicated road access for cargo from the east side of the airport.
The official stated, “Metro and RRTS connectivity have also been incorporated into the airport’s plans. Additionally, there is contemplation for potential high-speed rail connectivity from Delhi to Varanasi, which could feature a stop adjacent to the airport.”
Last year, NIA forged a partnership with IndiGo (6E) as the airport’s inaugural carrier, and recently, Akasa Air (QP) entered into a strategic collaboration with NIA.
The central government has also set an ambitious goal of achieving 10 million tonnes of air cargo by 2030. Currently, 90 percent of India’s international cargo volumes are handled by non-Indian carriers.
