GUWAHATI- During a severe storm and heavy rainfall in Guwahati, a section of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport’s (GAU) roof collapsed on Sunday. The sudden collapse of the ceiling resulted in water flowing inside, causing chaos at the airport.
Flight operations at the Guwahati airport had already been suspended due to harsh weather conditions. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the incident.
Guwahati Airport Roof Collapse
Operations at the airport were suspended due to a severe storm, diverting six flights to alternative destinations.
According to Chief Airport Officer Utpal Baruah, the storm caused the uprooting of a large tree at the Oil India complex near the Adani Group-controlled facility, obstructing a road.
However, the road was swiftly cleared to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply to the terminal. Baruah explained to the news agency that the damaged section of the airport roof was quite old, making it unable to withstand the harsh weather conditions. As a result, the ceiling gave way and allowed water to enter.
Flight Operations Affected
The Chief Airport Officer stated that following the collapse, water began leaking inside the airport due to overflow from outlet pipes, but assured that the situation is now under control.
Flight operations were affected on Sunday evening due to heavy downpours and strong winds, resulting in adverse weather conditions. Uprooted trees blocked the approach road. Additionally, the roof outlets experienced heavy overflow, leading to water ingress inside the terminal building.
A small section of the ceiling outside the terminal building collapsed under water and wind pressure. Fortunately, there were no injuries or significant damages. Due to adverse weather conditions, six flights were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata. However, operations have now returned to normal.
