China’s Airline Industry Recovery and Challenges
The recovery of China’s international airline industry has been gradual since the easing of pandemic restrictions in early 2023. It has struggled to keep pace with the growth witnessed in domestic travel, primarily due to consumers’ sensitivity to pricing amid an economy experiencing sluggishness.
According to Chen Ling, a deputy manager in China Southern’s North China marketing department, the airline’s international route network has rebounded to 80% of its 2019 levels. China Southern aims to increase this figure to 85% by the end of the year by introducing new routes.
China Southern, one of China’s three state carriers, recently reported an annual loss of 4.1 billion yuan. This loss is attributed to several factors, including weak consumer spending, high jet fuel costs, supply chain disruptions, and the yuan depreciation.
There is optimism that international travel departing from China could significantly improve this year. In January, China’s aviation regulator anticipated that the volume of international flights to and from the country would climb to 6,000 per week by the year’s end, approximately reaching 80% of the levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
