MEMPHIS— FedEx has marked a major milestone in the history of Memphis International Airport (MEM), officially dedicating the facility as Frederick W. Smith International Airport in honor of the late founder of FedEx.
The ceremony on August 11, 2026, brought together the Memphis community, airport officials and FedEx team members to recognize Smith’s influence on aviation, logistics, and the city’s economic growth.
FedEx Express (FX) joined the celebration as the airport dedication coincided with the first FWS Day of Service, a company-wide initiative inspired by Smith’s commitment to civic leadership.
The event also highlighted the deep relationship between FedEx and Memphis, where Smith established Federal Express in 1973 because of the city’s strategic location and dependable weather.
Smith’s Vision Transforms Memphis
The new airport name provides a permanent tribute to Smith, who died in June 2025 after decades of shaping the express transportation industry.
His decision to establish Federal Express in Memphis helped transform the city into one of the world’s most important air cargo centers.
Smith’s impact extended beyond the company. He supported Memphis’ economic and civic development while maintaining a close partnership between FedEx, local authorities, and the airport, strengthening the region’s role in global commerce.
FedEx also unveiled a new mural along Plough Boulevard as part of the dedication. The artwork features Smith’s portrait created from images of FedEx aircraft tails, creating a distinctive gateway for passengers and visitors entering or leaving Memphis.
FedEx Memphis Hub Drives Global Cargo Operations
The dedication comes as Memphis continues to serve as the center of FedEx’s global air cargo operation.
FedEx currently moves more than 18 million packages worldwide each day, while its Memphis World Hub processes more than 2.4 million packages daily.
The ceremony concluded with the arrival of FedEx Flight 1944, a Boeing 777 wearing the company’s original purple-and-orange livery.
The flight number reflects Smith’s birth year, 1944, while the aircraft carries the name Rosie, honoring one of his granddaughters.
The ceremonial landing provided a symbolic connection between Smith’s legacy and the aviation network he helped build. The aircraft naming also continues FedEx’s tradition of naming planes after employees’ children.
FWS Day Of Service Honors Community Legacy
The airport dedication coincided with the inaugural FWS Day of Service, which reflects Smith’s belief that business success should be matched by strong community involvement.
FedEx team members are participating in volunteer activities in communities where they live and work.
The initiative forms part of Purple Week, FedEx’s global celebration of its People-Service-Profit culture. More than 120 FedEx Cares volunteer and community impact events are taking place worldwide during the week.
FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam said every aircraft, person, and package passing through the renamed airport would carry the spirit of the company’s founder.
Richard W. Smith, FedEx chief operating officer, International, and CEO, Airline, also thanked the Memphis community and said the Smith family was proud to remain part of the city’s continuing story.
The annual FWS Day of Service will now provide another way for FedEx employees to preserve Smith’s legacy through community action, reinforcing the connection between the company, Memphis and the global aviation network.
