DENVER- Today, United Airlines (UA) inaugurated a new 150,000-square-foot building at its Flight Training Center in Denver (DEN), further expanding the world’s largest facility of its kind.
This additional space enables the airline to incorporate 12 advanced full-motion flight simulators into the center, with six already in operation.
United Expands Flight Training Simulator
In 2024 alone, United has hired over 300 pilots, building on recruiting more than 2,300 pilots in the previous year. The new facility enhances the training capacity for United’s extensive pilot team, currently numbering 16,000.
With the addition of the new building, United’s Flight Training Center now boasts eight buildings, offering over 700,000 square feet of training space and housing 46 state-of-the-art full-motion flight simulators.
These strategic personnel, infrastructure, and technology investments align with the airline’s United Next plan. CEO Scott Kirby, alongside leaders from the Flight Training Center and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, celebrated the facility’s opening, emphasizing the critical role these advancements play in supporting United’s rapid growth within the industry. Kirby stated,
“We’re growing faster than any airline in the industry, and our investments in our pilots and their training are critical to support the unprecedented number of new aircraft United will add to our fleet in the decades ahead. United pilots are the best aviators globally, and how we recruit, hire, and train directly supports that high standard of excellence.”

Enhanced Facilities
Situated in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood, this sprawling 23-acre facility serves as the exclusive training center for nearly 16,000 active pilots at United Airlines, encompassing both existing and newly hired personnel.
All United pilots undergo rigorous simulator training, guided by pilot instructors and evaluators, during the initial qualification phase and subsequently every nine months for certification maintenance, all of which takes place at the United Flight Training Center in Denver.
At present, the Flight Training Center features a total of 46 full-motion flight simulators, with six housed in the recently added building, along with an additional 21 fixed training devices. With room for expansion, the new building can accommodate six more full-motion flight simulators. This expansion results in a grand total of 52 full-motion flight simulators and 34 fixed training devices available at the Flight Training Center.
The introduction of the new building significantly boosts the training capacity, allowing the Flight Training Center to conduct over 32,000 training events annually and cater to the training needs of up to 860 pilots each day. Operating around the clock, the facility is operational for 362 days per year.
Impact on the Local Community by the Flight Training Center
United has dedicated over $145 million to the construction of the new building, anticipating the creation of over 370 new jobs as a result. Currently, out of United’s 10,000+ Denver-based employees, more than 1,600 are stationed at the Flight Training Center.
These employees represent 24 different departments, contributing to various roles such as flight instructing, flight evaluating, scheduling, pilot hiring, human resources, and flight standards.
In 2023, expenses totaling more than $44 million were incurred for hotel room nights in Denver to accommodate pilots visiting the training facility, with an expected increase to over $65 million in 2024.
Originally established between 1966-68 as part of the Stapleton Airport complex, United’s Flight Training Center has been the primary pilot training facility since its inception. United’s ongoing commitment to the Flight Training Center, amounting to $370 million since 2016, underscores its significance in the airline’s operations and the local community.
United’s Commitment to Denver
United Airlines remains steadfast in its investments in Denver. In the summer of 2023, the airline revealed the acquisition of two parcels of undeveloped land near Denver International Airport (DEN). This acquisition is crucial for the expansion of its Flight Training Center, addressing the current capacity constraints at the existing site. The goal is establishing flight training capabilities at the expanded Flight Training Center by 2028.
Recognizing Denver as its fastest-growing hub, United has injected nearly $1 billion in recent years to enhance the overall customer experience at DEN. This investment encompasses the introduction of new gates, cutting-edge United clubs — including the largest in the United network to date — and a modernized check-in lobby. In the past year alone, United hired over 2,500 individuals in Denver, with plans to add more than 1,000 employees in 2024.
As the airline with the most flights and passengers in the state compared to any other carrier, United is set to offer over 500 daily departures from DEN this summer, featuring 40 new summer flights. The airline provides services to more than 175 destinations, spanning 10 countries, from the Mile High City.
Embarking on Aviation Careers
