CHICAGO— A United Airlines (UA) passenger attracted online attention after using an unusual tactic to move from the rear of a Boeing 737-800 toward the front of the aircraft before other travelers could deplane.
The passenger repeatedly asked people to let him pass, framing the request as a test of whether they were racist.
The incident involved a United Airlines Boeing 737-800 operating between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), according to details accompanying the viral footage.
The aircraft appears to have been N78524, a Boeing 737-800 formerly operated by Continental Airlines, although the available video does not independently establish the exact flight. Flight-tracking records identify UA1657 as a regular ORD-LGA service using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
United Passenger Moves Forward Through Cabin
The passenger began walking from the back of the economy cabin after the seat belt sign had been switched off. With much of the aisle still open, he moved forward while other passengers remained seated or prepared to collect their belongings.
As travelers allowed him through, he repeatedly responded with “Good job,” turning the unusual maneuver into a running exchange with people standing in the aisle.
When he reached passengers who had already begun gathering their bags, he continued using the same tactic to secure a path toward the front.
At one point, he asked a passenger whether he was racist before requesting permission to pass. He then told the traveler to “prove” otherwise by allowing him to leave the aircraft first, prompting the passenger to step aside.
Viral Deplaning Tactic Sparks Online Debate
The strategy appeared to work because each traveler faced a simple choice: allow the man through or challenge an accusation of racism in front of other passengers. Several people chose to move, allowing him to continue toward the forward galley without creating a confrontation.
The passenger eventually reached the front of the aircraft while other travelers were still waiting in the cabin. He then declared that everyone was an ally and celebrated his successful attempt to reach the exit ahead of the rest of the cabin.
The video has generated debate because the passenger’s stated argument about allowing Black travelers to leave first did not consistently match his actions.
Viewers noted that he passed Black passengers during his walk toward the front, further highlighting the theatrical nature of the exchange.

The footage has attracted a mixture of amusement and criticism online. Some viewers treated the incident as an elaborate joke about airline deplaning etiquette, while others described the behavior as bullying, manipulation or simply cutting ahead of passengers.
Recent coverage of the viral video has also stressed that the footage does not independently establish the full circumstances surrounding the encounter. The passenger has not been publicly identified, and the available video does not show what happened before the recorded exchange.
