NEW YORK- Reportedly, American Airlines (AA) operated a redeye flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK) on February 2 with non-functional electrical systems.
The cabin was illuminated solely by emergency lighting. Flight attendants were unable to prepare food in the galley, and power was unavailable for reclining in business and first-class seats.
American Airlines Flight Without Any Service
A passenger, seated in first class (3F), disclosed on FlyerTalk.com, “The cabin exit strips and the emergency light in toilets were illuminated [but] toilets did not flush.”
This cross-country flight, AA28, originally scheduled to depart at 10:47 p.m. and land at New York JFK at 7:00 a.m. the following morning, is serviced by American’s premium Airbus A321, a product currently in the process of being phased out. The aircraft features coach, business class, and Flagship First Class seats.
Flagship First Class, a unique offering not provided by any other U.S. airline, experienced minimal service on this flight, receiving “no food, 1 cocktail.” Flight attendants attempted to serve, but their flashlights were running out of power as the flight progressed.
Beyond the absence of food service and the inability to recline into the promised beds in first and business class, passengers were troubled by unsanitary conditions in the restrooms.
Some passengers resorted to peeing in the sinks, as the toilets were reportedly in a deplorable state.
Similar Cases
American Airlines has previously operated flights from New York to Chicago without a lavatory, notifying passengers in advance about the lack of restroom facilities for the duration of the trip.
In contrast, a flight from New York to London turned back when only four out of the plane’s 12 lavatories malfunctioned due to concerns about passenger congregation posing a security risk.
However, passengers on the Los Angeles–New York redeye reported not receiving any proactive apology messages or compensation from the airline.
