MANCHESTER— An easyJet (U2) Airbus A321 was surrounded by airport fire engines at Manchester Airport (MAN) on August 20, 2026, after the pilot reported a smell of fumes in the cockpit while the aircraft was being prepared for departure.
Flight EZY9143 was scheduled to fly from Manchester to Dalaman Airport (DLM) in Turkey at 5:30 p.m.
Passengers were taken off the aircraft after emergency services attended the scene as a precaution.
EasyJet later confirmed that a technical issue prevented the aircraft from operating, with passengers provided accommodation and arrangements made for a replacement aircraft the following day.

easyJet Pilot Reports Cockpit Fumes
The incident occurred as the Airbus A321 was being pushed back from its stand for departure. During the process, the pilot reported detecting fumes in the cockpit, prompting the airport to activate its emergency response procedures.
Airport fire crews and other emergency services quickly arrived at the aircraft.
Despite the presence of multiple fire engines, there was no reported fire, and the emergency response was described as precautionary rather than a reaction to an active blaze.
Passengers were subsequently disembarked from the aircraft. The response allowed airport teams to assess the situation while keeping the aircraft out of service until the technical issue could be addressed.

Flight Cancelled After Technical Issue
easyJet confirmed that flight EZY9143 could not operate as scheduled because of a technical issue affecting the Airbus A321.
The airline said customers disembarked normally and that the emergency services attended the aircraft only as a precaution.
The cancellation meant passengers could not continue their journey to Dalaman on August 20.
easyJet arranged hotel accommodation and meals where required, with affected travelers expected to continue their journey on August 21 using a replacement aircraft, Manchester Evening News reported.
The incident resulted in a delay to the affected passengers but did not develop into a major airport emergency.
The airline also apologized for the disruption and said it had taken steps to reduce the impact on customers.

Limited Airport Disruption After Emergency Response
The emergency response briefly affected a small number of other flights preparing to depart from Manchester around the same time. However, the disruption was limited and did not cause significant wider delays at the airport.
A separate fire alarm reportedly sounded inside the terminal during the same period. That alarm was understood to be unrelated to the aircraft incident and was treated as a false alarm.
The event highlights the precautionary procedures used when an aircraft crew reports a possible technical concern before departure.
Although the easyJet aircraft did not experience a fire, the airport’s emergency crews responded immediately to ensure the aircraft and passengers could be assessed safely.
easyJet reiterated that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority. The airline also stated that its aircraft operate in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines and that the affected passengers would resume their journey to Dalaman on the replacement aircraft.
