FORT WORTH- American Airlines (AA) has quietly scaled back its 24 hour free refund policy, removing the flexibility it previously offered on tickets purchased close to departure.
The change brings the Fort Worth based carrier exactly in line with federal minimum requirements, while Delta Air Lines (DL) retains the most generous 24 hour refund terms among major United States airlines.

What Changed In American’s 24 Hour Refund Terms
The update was first flagged by View from the Wing and subsequently reported by OMAAT, which confirmed that American now complies with regulations rather than exceeding them.
Until this update, American allowed passengers to cancel a booking within 24 hours of purchase and receive a full refund to the original form of payment, provided the ticket was issued at least two days before departure. That 2 day threshold has been removed.
Under the revised terms, a passenger qualifies for a full refund within 24 hours of purchase only if the ticket was booked at least seven days before departure.
Anyone purchasing inside that seven-day window no longer has access to a free cash refund during the first 24 hours after booking.

American’s Updated Customer Service Guidance
The airline has already revised its customer service FAQ pages to reflect the new terms. The published guidance confirms the following conditions:
- A refund is available within 24 hours of first buying the ticket, provided the booking was made at least seven days before departure.
- The 24-hour refund policy applies to all ticket types.
- The passenger must actively cancel the trip in order to receive the refund.
- Tickets bought through a travel agency or another booking source must be refunded by that seller, not by American.
- Reservations booked as part of a group block do not qualify for the 24-hour refund at all.

How Policy Compares To Federal Requirements
Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations require airlines to offer passengers the option of a free refund within 24 hours of booking, provided the ticket is purchased at least a week in advance.
Many carriers have historically gone beyond that requirement, offering wider windows to put customers at ease at the point of purchase.
American had been one of those carriers. With this update, the airline no longer exceeds the federal baseline in this area and instead matches it precisely.

Cash Refunds Versus Travel Credits
The change applies specifically to cash refunds returned to the original form of payment. It does not eliminate all flexibility.
As before, many ticket types still qualify for a travel credit, which remains valid for 12 months from the date the original ticket was issued.
Passengers who are willing to accept a credit rather than a cash refund therefore lose less from this update than those who need their money returned.

Where Flexibility For Last Minute Travel
Among major United States carriers, Delta continues to offer the most generous approach in this category.
The airline extends 24-hour refund flexibility right up to the day of departure. A passenger who books a Delta ticket the day before a flight can still cancel within 24 hours and receive a full refund.
Travelers committed to flying American but uncertain about their plans have an alternative route. Several online travel agencies apply their own 24-hour cancellation policies that hold even for bookings made close to departure.
Expedia is among the sites that operate this way. Terms differ between agencies, so passengers should confirm the specific cancellation rules of the booking site before purchasing.

What This Means For Last Minute Bookings
American has long held a reputation for flexible handling of refunds and ticket holds across both revenue and award tickets.
This adjustment removes one clear area where the airline treated customers more favorably than the rules required.
The practical takeaway is straightforward. Booking a ticket six days or fewer before departure now carries no cash refund safety net during the first 24 hours.
Passengers who are unsure about a trip and place little value on a trip credit may find better protection by booking those last minute tickets through an online travel agency instead.
