FORT WORTH— American Airlines (AA) is preparing for the largest summer schedule in its 100-year history, with the carrier expecting to welcome 75 million customers across 750,000 flights between May 21 and September 8, 2026. The centennial summer surpasses the airline’s previous record set in 2019.
The Fort Worth-based carrier projects 4.2 million customers across more than 40,000 flights during Memorial Day weekend alone, from May 21 through May 26, 2026.
Major hubs, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Miami International Airport (MIA), and London Heathrow Airport (LHR), anchor the operation, with Friday, May 22, expected to be the busiest travel day of the holiday weekend.

American Airlines Records Summer Flights
American Airlines has restructured key parts of its network to support record demand. At DFW, the airline rolled out a new 13-bank schedule that has already reduced delays, lowered customer misconnects, and minimized gate changes.
The hub has also recorded its best baggage handling performance and higher customer satisfaction scores in the first month under the new schedule.
In Philadelphia, the airline redesigned its afternoon transatlantic schedule to ease congestion and expand travel options for international customers.
Across the network, American invested heavily in scheduled block time, the period allotted for each flight, and posted the best block performance among major U.S. carriers in April 2026.
Chief Operating Officer David Seymour credited the airline’s 130,000 team members for building an operation prepared for peak demand, calling it reliable, resilient, and customer-focused.

Chicago O’Hare Returns to Capacity Discipline
The Federal Aviation Administration’s decision to align flight schedules with ORD’s operational capacity has improved performance at one of American’s most strategic hubs.
Customers can expect better on-time performance, fewer congestion-related delays, and a more predictable operation through Chicago this summer.
American expects to welcome more than 5.2 million customers at ORD this summer. The figure represents an 11% increase compared to 2025 and a 48% jump from 2023.

Customer Experience Enhancements
American has introduced several customer-facing upgrades for the summer travel season. The American app now features digital tools that explain the reasons behind delays and cancellations, while offering self-service rebooking, bag tracking, and digital voucher options.
The airline has expanded digital wallet integration, becoming the first carrier to support Samsung Wallet boarding passes with live updates. Connect Assist technology, which proposes brief holds to save connecting customers, has saved tens of thousands of connections to date.
AAdvantage members continue to receive free Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T on nearly every American flight. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is now available at 60 airports, including every American hub, and travelers aged 30 and under receive a $20 discount on TSA PreCheck enrollment during May.
The One Stop Security program is now active on all flights between DFW and LHR. The initiative allows connecting customers to skip baggage reclaim and additional security screening at either airport.
Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the centennial year investments are designed to deliver a smoother, more connected travel experience for every customer flying with the airline this summer.

Network Expansion and Peak Travel Days
American Airlines is launching five new long-haul routes this summer. From PHL, the carrier will begin service to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) and Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). DFW gains nonstop service to Athens International Airport (ATH) and Zurich Airport (ZRH), while MIA adds a route to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP).
July 17 is projected to be the busiest day of the summer with 6,995 flights, followed closely by July 10 with 6,991 flights. Across the season, the airline averages five departures every minute, equivalent to nearly 500 customers taking off each minute.
The top three non-hub destinations are Orlando International Airport (MCO), LHR, and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
American Airlines operates more than 6,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations across more than 60 countries, serving over 200 million customers annually.
The airline traces its history to a Midwestern air mail carrier launched in 1926 and is a founding member of the oneworld alliance, which collectively serves more than 900 destinations worldwide.
