BARCELONA– Ryanair (FR) has discontinued its seasonal service between Poitiers (PIS) and Barcelona (BCN) for 2026, reducing connectivity for regional travelers. The route removal reflects broader network adjustments by the low-cost carrier across smaller French airports.
Local authorities in Vienna confirmed that the route will not operate during the 2026 season. The decision affects passengers who relied on the direct connection for leisure and family travel between western France and Spain.

Ryanair Cuts Flights Between Politiers and Barcelona
The Poitiers–Barcelona route had been a key low-cost option for regional passengers. Regular travelers have already begun shifting to alternative airports, including Nantes, which requires additional ground travel and higher costs.
Airport representatives acknowledged the suspension and indicated efforts are underway to restore the route in future seasons. However, there is no official confirmation from Ryanair regarding a potential return in 2027.
The removal has reduced travel convenience for residents who previously depended on direct flights. It also highlights the vulnerability of smaller regional routes that rely heavily on seasonal demand.

Passenger Decline Trends
Data shows that the Poitiers–Barcelona route experienced a drop in demand before its suspension. Passenger numbers declined by approximately 8 percent between 2024 and 2025, falling from over 19,000 to fewer than 18,000 travelers.
This trend reflects a wider decline in traffic at Poitiers Airport, where overall passenger numbers dropped by nearly 9 percent during the same period. Reduced demand across multiple routes has placed pressure on airlines to reassess network viability.
According to Connexion France, following the change, the airport’s network in 2026 will be limited to just four destinations:
Montenegro – three scheduled departures in May 2026
Lyon – operating twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays
London – a single weekly service on Sundays
Edinburgh – two weekly flights during the summer season, on Wednesdays and Saturdays

Ryanair Network Strategy
The route suspension aligns with Ryanair’s broader strategy of adjusting operations in response to economic and regulatory conditions. The airline has scaled back several routes in France in recent years, particularly at smaller regional airports.
Airline executives have cited increased taxes and operational costs as key factors influencing these decisions. Higher charges at regional airports have made certain routes less profitable, especially given Ryanair’s low-margin business model.
At the same time, the airline continues to expand in markets where operating conditions are more favorable. While some French routes have been cut, others have been introduced or reinstated, particularly at larger or more cost-efficient airports.
