DUBLIN- A passenger travelling with Ryanair (FR) at Dublin Airport (DUB) was convicted after bullying boarding staff and assaulting an airport police officer at the aircraft steps on 20 August last.
Dublin District Court heard that the accused impeded an authorised officer and engaged in post-arrest violent behaviour.
According to The Journal, sentencing was adjourned after the judge criticised his conduct as ignorance, rudeness, and violence.

Ryanair Passenger Staircase Assault
Shine Thomas, 47, a computer science graduate with an address in Old Kilmainham, Dublin 8, denied impeding an authorised officer at the airport and denied violent behaviour at a garda station.
He is a married father of 2, originally from India, and has lived in Ireland for 10 years. He had no prior convictions.
The court heard that Thomas was bringing his family on holiday to London when he failed to complete the boarding process at the Terminal 1 gate.
Despite not finalising the procedure, he proceeded toward the Ryanair aircraft without authorisation.
Boarding staff reported that he became uncooperative and bullied crew members. Some of the scenes occurred in the presence of children.
Dublin Airport Police officer Dean Farrell testified that he approached the accused at the aircraft stairs and attempted to de escalate the situation. After Thomas was formally refused permission to board, he pushed Officer Farrell.
He was restrained and handcuffed at the aircraft steps before being transported by car to a local garda station.
Judge John Hughes stated that CCTV footage clearly showed the accused causing a problem and failing to cooperate with the boarding crew. The judge rejected the defence position and found him guilty.

Garda Station Conduct and Medical Claims
Garda Declan Ryan told the court that Thomas refused to exit the patrol vehicle on arrival at the station. Six members were required to carry him inside. He lay face down on the floor but was breathing easily and showed no signs of distress.
Thomas was placed in a holding cell. Garda Ryan stated that as he removed the handcuffs, he was struck by the accused.
A doctor examined Garda Ryan and confirmed that he had not sustained any injury. Thomas’s wife was contacted and attended the station, but there was very little conversation.
Thomas refused to sign a bail bond and was held in custody until his court hearing, at which he was released.
During proceedings, Thomas instructed his counsel that he had suffered broken ribs and had reports to confirm those injuries. The court was later informed that no medical documentation was produced.

Defence Arguments and Judicial Response
The defence, led by barrister Paul Larkin Coyle, described Thomas as highly intelligent and holding a postgraduate degree. The accused stated that he flew frequently and was familiar with check-in procedures.
He claimed airline staff should not have placed his passport on the desk and argued that he believed it was mishandled.
Garda Ryan told him the passport was in no danger of being taken or lost.
Thomas also maintained that he was not asked for his details when brought to the station. Garda Ryan rejected that claim and told the court that obtaining an arrested person’s details is the first procedure upon arrival.
The defence argued that Thomas was entitled to resist a lawful arrest. Judge Hughes rejected that submission.
The judge stated that the accused had not shown much intelligence on the date in question. He described Thomas’s behaviour toward staff managing thousands of passengers daily as outrageous, wrong, and criminal.

Sentencing Adjournment and Legal Implications
After being found guilty, Thomas apologised and claimed he was off work due to injuries. Judge Hughes warned that a recorded conviction could have implications for his visa status.
Sentencing was adjourned until May. The court ordered a probation report and imposed conditions.
These include completion of an anger management course and providing evidence of job applications if he is not back at work before the next hearing.
The case underscores the legal consequences of failing to comply with airport security procedures and assaulting authorised officers within restricted aviation zones.
