FORT WORTH- American Airlines (AA) plans to extend free onboard WiFi across its remaining widebody aircraft while improving lounges and onboard dining services.
Early results show higher customer satisfaction on flights offering free connectivity, prompting further fleetwide rollout and service upgrades.

American Airlines Free WiFi
American Airlines has completed free WiFi installation across more than 90 percent of its fleet, primarily on aircraft equipped with ViaSat and Intelsat systems. However, some Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft still rely on legacy Panasonic connectivity, which remains outside the free service rollout.
A leaked internal employee meeting revealed that the airline now plans to extend free WiFi coverage to the remaining widebody aircraft within the next 12 to 24 months. This step would bring consistency across long-haul and international services.
Preliminary customer data shows a 15 percent improvement in passenger satisfaction scores on flights offering free WiFi. Net promoter scores also improved across routes where complimentary connectivity is available, indicating that passengers see connectivity as a core travel expectation rather than a premium feature.

Fleetwide Free WiFi Rollout Timeline
The airline initially prioritized domestic narrowbody aircraft and regional jets, where installation costs and technical upgrades were simpler. Widebody aircraft posed greater challenges due to older onboard systems.
Upgrading remaining aircraft requires replacing or modifying connectivity hardware, which involves aircraft downtime and certification approvals. American expects gradual installation progress over the next two years.
American Airlines also plans to improve delay and cancellation communication. Customers will soon receive clearer notifications explaining operational causes instead of vague technical descriptions.
The airline intends to provide updates digitally and through airport staff, helping travelers better understand disruptions and plan accordingly, ViewfromtheWing flagged.

Major Lounge Expansion and Renovation Plans
American continues to invest in its lounge network across major hubs. Renovations and expansions are planned or underway in several locations:
- Admirals Club upgrades at Washington National Airport (DCA)
- New premium lounges planned in Charlotte (CLT)
- Flagship Lounge expansion in Miami (MIA)
- Additional premium lounge capacity planned at Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) with Terminal F development
Executives have also hinted at additional lounge announcements later this year, including possible expansion of the Provisions concept offering quicker food options.

Growing Focus on Food and Beverage Partnerships
American Airlines recently introduced a partnership with Pecan Lodge barbecue for premium passengers on Dallas to New York flights, with pre-order meal options available.
The airline describes this as the beginning of broader food partnerships. Additional collaborations may expand to other routes if customer response remains strong.
Such partnerships allow airlines to showcase regional cuisine while improving premium cabin value without overhauling catering operations.

Customer Experience Strategy Moving Forward
American Airlines’ strategy now centers on closing service gaps with competitors by focusing on connectivity, lounge comfort, and food quality.
By standardizing WiFi access and upgrading airport services, the airline aims to improve loyalty among premium and frequent travelers while keeping operational costs manageable.
