LONDON- Singapore has secured the world’s most powerful passport for 2026, retaining the top position for the third consecutive year based on global visa-free access.
Japan and South Korea follow closely, while the United States continues its gradual decline amid tighter immigration and visa policies.

Most Powerful Passports in the World
Singapore leads the 2026 Henley Passport Index with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 192 destinations. This marks a steady rise in global mobility influence since 2010, when the country ranked 11th worldwide. The ranking reflects diplomatic reach, economic stability, and international trust in border controls.
Japan and South Korea share second place, with passport holders enjoying access to 188 destinations each. Both countries continue to benefit from strong bilateral agreements and consistent foreign policy engagement.
Third place is shared by Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, each offering access to 186 destinations.
According to Henley and Partners, global mobility has expanded over the past two decades, but access remains uneven. Passport strength increasingly mirrors economic power and political stability, concentrating travel freedom among a small group of nations.

United States Sees Continued Decline
The United States ranks 10th in 2026, offering visa-free access to 179 destinations. This represents a continued slide from its former top rankings in 2006 and 2014. The decline aligns with stricter immigration policies and expanded travel restrictions.
Recent measures include partial and full travel bans affecting dozens of countries and the suspension of immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 nations. While non-immigrant visas such as tourist and business visas remain unaffected, reciprocal restrictions from other countries have reduced overall mobility for US passport holders.
Henley and Partners note that the United States currently allows visa-free entry to travelers from only 46 nationalities, limiting inbound and outbound mobility advantages.

Least Powerful Passports in 2026
Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the index, with access to just 24 destinations. Ongoing conflict, political instability, and limited diplomatic engagement continue to restrict travel freedom for Afghan citizens.
At the same time, the United Arab Emirates stands out for long-term gains. Since 2006, the UAE has added 149 visa-free destinations. In 2026, it ranks fifth, tied with Hungary, Portugal, Slovakia, and Slovenia, each offering access to 184 destinations.

How the Henley Passport Index Works
The Henley Passport Index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association. It evaluates 199 passports against 227 destinations worldwide. Each passport receives a score based on destinations that allow visa-free entry, visa on arrival, or electronic travel authority access.
Scores are binary and unweighted. Passports with identical scores share the same rank. The index is updated monthly to reflect real-time visa policy changes, ensuring accuracy and consistency across reporting periods.
