ISTANBUL- There will be a long-absent direct air link restored when Turkish Airlines (TK) launches scheduled passenger flights between Türkiye and Armenia in March 2026 on the Istanbul – Yerevan route. The carrier has confirmed that nonstop services will begin on March 11, 2026.
The new route will connect Istanbul Airport (IST) with Zvartnots International Airport, Yerevan (EVN), linking the primary international gateways of both countries. Turkish Airlines will initially operate one daily round-trip service, positioning the route as a core part of its short-haul regional network while responding to rising demand tied to diplomatic and economic engagement.

Turkish Airlines Yerevan Flight
Turkish Airlines will begin operations with seven weekly flights, offering a consistent daily schedule from launch. The airline plans a phased capacity increase aligned with seasonal travel patterns and network optimization.
From May 14, 2026, weekly frequencies will rise from seven to ten, reflecting early summer demand.
A further expansion is scheduled for June 15, when the route will operate 14 times per week, effectively doubling daily service during the peak travel season.
The increase suggests confidence in sustained passenger demand, including visiting friends and relatives traffic, business travel, and transit passengers connecting through Istanbul’s global hub.
Istanbul Airport’s extensive long-haul network is expected to provide onward connectivity for travelers from Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

Türkiye Armenia aviation ties
Direct air services between Türkiye and Armenia have been limited for decades, largely shaped by political conditions and closed land borders. The two countries do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, and their shared border has remained closed since 1993.
Momentum toward normalization increased after Azerbaijan’s 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict victory, which reshaped regional geopolitics.
Türkiye and Armenia subsequently appointed special envoys to pursue a structured dialogue focused on transport, trade corridors, and border infrastructure.
Aviation has emerged as one of the most practical confidence-building measures within this framework.
The Istanbul–Yerevan route complements parallel discussions on reopening the Kars–Gyumri railway and restoring cross-border freight and passenger movement.

Impact on regional travel
The launch of daily flights is expected to reduce travel times significantly compared with indirect routings via third countries. It also introduces pricing competition and greater schedule flexibility for passengers traveling between the South Caucasus and Türkiye.
For Armenia, expanded access to Istanbul’s global hub strengthens international connectivity and tourism potential. For Türkiye, the route reinforces Istanbul’s role as a regional transit center bridging Europe and Eurasia.
The summer frequency increase indicates that Turkish Airlines views the route not as symbolic, but as commercially viable within its broader network strategy. The decision also aligns with the airline’s ongoing expansion across secondary and politically sensitive markets.

Bottom Line
The resumption of direct Istanbul–Yerevan flights represents a meaningful step in restoring aviation links between Türkiye and Armenia.
With daily service expanding to 14 weekly flights by mid-2026, Turkish Airlines is positioning the route as both a diplomatic milestone and a sustainable commercial operation.
