CHRISTCHURCH – New Zealand’s flag carrier has outlined a sharp rise in holiday travel demand as the peak summer season approaches. Air New Zealand (NZ) confirmed that millions of domestic and international passengers are expected to fly during the festive period, marking one of the airline’s busiest travel windows of the year.
The surge will be most visible at major gateways such as Auckland Airport (AKL), Queenstown Airport (ZQN), and Wellington Airport (WLG), where passenger flows are forecast to increase steadily through late December. The airline said the data reflects strong confidence among travellers planning leisure trips across Aotearoa and overseas destinations.

Queenstown is projected to welcome approximately 260,000 arriving and departing passengers, reinforcing its status as the country’s leading tourism hub. Nelson is expected to handle about 150,000 travellers, while Dunedin is forecast to see around 110,000 passengers during the same period.

NZ’s International Route Demand
On international services, Air New Zealand forecasts about 1.1 million passengers travelling to and from the country. Short-haul routes across the Tasman remain the strongest performers, driven by consistent leisure and visiting friends and relatives travel.
Sydney Airport (SYD) leads international demand with around 195,000 passengers, followed closely by Melbourne Airport (MEL) with 185,000 travellers. Brisbane Airport (BNE) is also expected to remain busy, serving approximately 120,000 customers over the holiday period.
Pacific island destinations continue to attract strong interest, with an estimated 170,000 passengers heading to sun-focused routes such as Fiji and Tahiti.
Long-haul travel also shows resilience, with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) projected to handle around 56,000 passengers connecting to and from New Zealand.

Passenger Travel Advice
The airline indicated that the busiest days for international travel would fall on Saturday, December 20, and Saturday, January 3. On each of these days, up to 20,000 passengers are expected to pass through international terminals.
With airport facilities expected to operate near peak capacity, travellers have been advised to plan ahead.
The airline recommended online check-in where available, early arrival at airports, and allowing extra time for families, oversized baggage, or special assistance needs.
Passengers were also reminded to review aviation safety guidelines before packing gifts. Certain items may be restricted from carry-on or checked baggage, making pre-travel checks essential during the holiday rush.
