DUBAI- Emirates (EK) cancels all scheduled flights to and from Lisbon (LIS) on Thursday, December 11, as Portugal prepares for a nationwide general strike expected to paralyse the country’s transport sector.
The airline confirmed the operational shutdown will affect passengers connecting through Dubai (DXB) on the affected services.
Four flights are suspended: EK191 and EK193 from Dubai to Lisbon, and EK192 and EK194 from Lisbon to Dubai. Customers connecting through Dubai on EK191 and EK193 on December 11 will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin.
Reported by Gulf News, travellers impacted by the changes are urged to rebook through Emirates or their issuing travel agents.

Emirates Cancels Lisbon Flights
Emirates stated that passengers who booked directly should contact customer service to secure alternative arrangements, while those who booked through agencies must coordinate with their travel agents.
The airline issued an apology for the inconvenience, noting that it is working with airport partners and authorities to stabilize operations once the strike ends.
The full flight suspension leaves no Emirates operations at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport for the day, heightening pressure on travellers seeking replacement connections during a peak disruption period.

Roots and Ramifications of the Labor Protest
Portugal implements the strike amid backlash against reforms favoring employers. The 2013 general strike marked austerity measures tied to international bailout funds. Today’s action revives labor resistance in a fragile economic recovery.
Unions mobilize nationwide. Ports stop operations, buses cease routes, and schools close. Tourism suffers major losses during peak travel season.
Aviation vulnerability emerges clearly. Ground staff absences and air traffic control gaps force proactive cancellations. Emirates acts to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Portugal’s National Strike
Public-sector employees, teachers, healthcare workers and public transport staff are expected to participate, creating major disruptions across air travel, rail services and urban transit networks.
Transport operators in major Portuguese cities anticipate reduced staffing levels and halted services throughout the day.
The strike is forecast to affect both domestic mobility and international travel, with thousands of passengers facing delays, cancellations and rerouting challenges.
Aviation unions have joined the nationwide protest, adding significant pressure to airport operations.
The civil aviation union SNPVAC, representing around 5,000 TAP Air Portugal crew members, along with cabin crews from easyJet, Ryanair and Azores Airlines, has confirmed its involvement.
Their participation is expected to cause substantial delays and cancellations at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) and other major gateways, as limited staffing reduces airlines’ ability to maintain scheduled operations.

Guidance for Affected Passengers
Emirates urges passengers to update contact details via the Manage Your Booking portal for instant alerts. The carrier works closely with partners and authorities to assist stranded passengers and restore normal operations once the strike subsides.
Travelers receive rebooking support, hotel stays, or refunds per policy. Alternative carriers face similar constraints due to widespread participation.
Emirates monitors developments and resumes services promptly. Early contact with support teams speeds resolution and reduces travel stress.
