NEW DELHI- India has approved a major five-year sustainment and upgrade package for its fleet of Sikorsky MH-60R naval warfare helicopters. The package, valued at Rs80 billion ($959 million), aims to ensure high availability of the MH-60R fleet and strengthen the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine and multi-mission capabilities.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that a letter of offer and acceptance was signed with the United States government under the Foreign Military Sales programme, marking one of India’s most significant rotorcraft support deals in recent years.

Indian Navy Fleet Sustainment Plan
The Ministry of Defence stated that the sustainment programme will enhance the helicopters’ operational reliability and maintainability, particularly during intensive naval deployments.
Officials emphasised that the package covers all mission roles, allowing the MH-60Rs to operate seamlessly from dispersed coastal bases as well as frontline warships.
The agreement supplements India’s earlier procurement, which initially included sensors, training, and weapons. This new sustainment structure focuses on long-term fleet support, ensuring the rotorcraft remain fully mission-capable during complex maritime operations.
India originally ordered 24 helicopters in 2020, with deliveries beginning in 2021, and this long-term support arrangement will help maintain mission readiness across varied operational environments.

US FMS Package Details
The deal follows the framework earlier detailed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which included advanced systems such as forward-looking infrared sensors, external fuel tanks and 30 units of the Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio System.
This secure, jam-resistant communication suite enhances data-sharing across naval assets.
Unspecified munitions, maintenance support and spare parts are also included in the FMS structure.
Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, the parent division of Sikorsky, remains the prime contractor for all work under the programme, supporting India’s fleet in partnership with US government agencies.

Current Fleet Status
According to the latest World Air Forces data, the Indian Navy has taken delivery of 13 MH-60Rs from its total order of 24.
These helicopters are already integrated into core maritime operations and are being used for anti-submarine warfare, search-and-rescue, over-the-horizon targeting and utility missions.
The sustainment package ensures that the remaining aircraft, once delivered, will also be supported under the same logistical and maintenance umbrella.
This approach provides consistent fleet management and reduces the risk of downtime during high-tempo naval deployments.

Bottom Line
India’s approval of the Rs80 billion five-year sustainment package marks a significant investment in long-term maritime security.
The MH-60R has emerged as a critical asset for the Indian Navy, and this extensive support programme ensures the fleet remains capable, deployable and fully aligned with India’s expanding naval mission profile.
