FORT WORTH- American Airlines (AA) flight attendants are facing the threat of termination after disputes over unpaid union dues coincided with a proposed 48% hike in dues.
The development has drawn national attention as the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation offers free legal aid to affected crewmembers.
The tension between the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and its members has intensified, particularly after reports of American Airlines enforcing union requests to terminate employees behind on dues.
The issue has also raised broader concerns about transparency, representation, and financial accountability within the union’s leadership.

American Airlines Flight Attendant Legal Aid
The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation has begun assisting American Airlines flight attendants, many of whom claim they are being penalized for circumstances beyond their control.
When attendants take unpaid leave or experience reduced hours, automatic deductions for union dues may stop.
Despite this, the union still demands payment, leading to conflicts that can result in termination.
Adding to the strain, the APFA has proposed a 48% increase in union dues, along with future automatic adjustments.
Critics argue that members receive little tangible benefit from these increases, aside from promises of “modernization,” improved visibility in the labor movement, and the creation of an APFA mobile app.
According to View from the Wing, internal disputes and lawsuits over alleged financial misconduct have further divided the union’s leadership.

Legal Rights and Union Membership
The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation emphasizes that while some dues payments are mandatory under certain contracts, union membership itself is voluntary.
Flight attendants who opt out are not required to fund the union’s political or non-bargaining activities.
The foundation’s intervention aims to protect those rights and ensure that employees are not unfairly penalized for exercising them.
The organization has a history of successful cases within the airline industry. It previously represented an Allegiant Air (G4) flight attendant who lost seniority due to dues-related issues and helped a Southwest Airlines (WN) flight attendant win reinstatement and a $1.1 million award after being terminated for publicly criticizing her union president’s political views.

Internal Union Conflicts
Beyond the immediate disputes, the APFA has been mired in internal lawsuits over alleged misuse of funds and leadership accountability.
These divisions have reportedly influenced negotiations with American Airlines and may even relate to attempts by rival unions to gain influence.
Some observers suggest that recent contract talks positioned American’s flight attendants as leverage in a broader strategy to strengthen bargaining positions at United Airlines (UA).
For flight attendants, the combination of financial pressure, internal union conflict, and employment uncertainty has created a challenging environment.
The free legal support offered may provide a measure of relief for those navigating complex labor and legal obligations.
