BENGALURU- India has signed a landmark deal worth over $1 billion to acquire 113 jet engines for its indigenous Tejas Mark-1A fighter aircraft. The agreement was finalized with US aerospace giant General Electric (GE), marking a significant step in strengthening the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational capability.
The engines are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2032, supplementing an earlier order of 99 engines from 2021. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the state-run aerospace company, will receive the engines to support the production and operationalization of the Tejas Mark-1A jets.
India GE $1 Billion Engine Deal
The deal includes the delivery of 113 GE-F404 engines, designed to power the single-engine Tejas Mark-1A fighter. HAL expects the engines to be delivered gradually, starting with a batch of ten to facilitate timely induction into the IAF.
Production is set to scale up to 20 aircraft per year, eventually reaching 24–30 jets annually with the operationalization of a third production line in Nashik.
The move addresses earlier delays caused by engine shortages and paves the way for the IAF to boost its fleet amid regional security concerns. The Tejas program remains central to India’s ambition for a self-reliant defense ecosystem.
Tejas Production Status
Currently, HAL has completed 11 Tejas Mark-1A jets, four of which are already equipped with the new GE-F404 engines.
The remaining jets are in various stages of production and testing at HAL’s Bengaluru facility. Certification trials for the initial batch are progressing steadily, with the intention of delivering the first ten aircraft to the IAF by March next year.
Delays in engine supply had previously slowed production, but the new $1 billion agreement ensures a continuous supply of engines to meet the projected production targets.
In addition to engines, HAL is simultaneously integrating advanced systems into the jets, including the Astra beyond-visual-range missiles, ASRAAM short-range missiles, and the Elta ELM-2052 multi-mode radar system.
These upgrades are designed to enhance combat capabilities and situational awareness, ensuring that the Mark-1A jets meet modern air combat requirements.
Strategic Importance
The acquisition of 113 GE-F404 engines for the Tejas Mark-1A is not just a production milestone but also a strategic move to enhance India’s air combat readiness.
The IAF currently operates 29 fighter squadrons, well below the authorized strength of 42.5, leaving the country with a capability gap in defending its airspace.
The addition of more than 180 upgraded Tejas Mark-1A jets, supported by the new engines, is essential to bridge this gap and strengthen India’s deterrence posture.
Regional security dynamics make this expansion critical. Neighboring countries such as China and Pakistan field larger and technologically advanced air forces, making it imperative for India to modernize and expand its fighter fleet.
Beyond immediate operational readiness, HAL’s negotiations for the co-production of more powerful GE-F414 engines for the upcoming Tejas Mark-2 program indicate a long-term strategic plan, ensuring that India’s air power continues to evolve in line with modern combat requirements.
