NAGPUR- Tata Group-owned Air India (AI) has completed the repainting and cabin retrofit of 12 aircraft at Nagpur (NAG), handled by Indamer AAR Technics Private Limited. Each aircraft received a new livery and upgraded seats as part of a fleet-wide modernization effort.
The maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at Nagpur managed the assignment as part of Air India’s ongoing fleet transformation. The total cost per aircraft is estimated at ₹10 crore, including ₹8 crore for new seating and ₹1.5 crore for repainting.

Air India Retrofits 12 Aircraft
Indamer AAR Technics’ MRO facility in Nagpur was awarded the task to repaint and retrofit 12 of the 26 Air India aircraft undergoing upgrades. Eleven of these aircraft have already been completed, and the twelfth is scheduled to roll out within days.
Repainting an aircraft is a specialized process distinct from regular maintenance. The Nagpur facility has a dedicated hangar for this purpose, where around 40 skilled technicians work for about a week to complete a single aircraft.
They apply aviation-grade coatings that ensure durability, reduced drag, and visual consistency with Air India’s latest branding.
The freshly painted planes now sport the airline’s updated livery, aligning with its broader rebranding and modernization campaign following its acquisition by the Tata Group, the Times of India reported.

Growing Role of Nagpur’s MRO Facility
In just over a year, Indamer AAR Technics has positioned Nagpur as a key hub for aircraft painting and refurbishment.
The company, traditionally focused on mechanical and structural maintenance, has expanded into repainting as a significant business line.
Sources indicate that similar contracts from other Indian carriers are under discussion. The success of the Air India project has boosted the MRO’s reputation, marking it as a preferred choice for domestic airlines looking to upgrade or maintain their fleets within India rather than sending aircraft overseas.

The Broader Impact
Air India’s investment in repainting and retrofitting reflects its push toward a uniform, refreshed fleet experience. Beyond aesthetics, new seating improves passenger comfort and cabin efficiency.
The use of high-quality aviation paint ensures longevity and better fuel efficiency through smoother surface finishes.
For Nagpur, the ongoing MRO activity contributes to the city’s growing status as an aviation maintenance hub, creating skilled jobs and attracting more airline projects to central India.
